One of our favorite ways to see New Hampshire is by car. What's easier and more calming than hopping in, buckling up, and meandering through the mountains without consistent cell phone service? This drive, straight through the best part of the White Mountains, will take just part of the day which means it won't require a ton of planning. Plan your excursion just after a fresh snowfall, and the views will be even more magical. Out of all of the great New Hampshire road trips we can embark on the Kancamagus Highway in winter still ranks one of the highest. You can beat the crowds and have the overlooks all to yourself to witness the beautiful scenery, so let's hop in the car and go!
Of all of the ways to enjoy the scenery, this scenic winter drive in New Hampshire might just be the most beautiful.
There are several overlooks to enjoy but if the season has seen a lot of snowfall some of the parking lots do not get fully plowed. A quick climb over a few snow banks could solve that problem or you can just enjoy the drive from beginning to end.
The Kancamagus Highway, which is also Route 112, offers a little over 34 miles of beauty, including the highest point which is at a soaring 2855 feet over sea level. One of our favorite overlooks is at that high point which offers phenomenal views of mountains as far as the eye can see.
Again in the winter some of the parking lots for the overlooks do not get plowed and at the highest point is one of those parking lots. There is however another overlook just west of this one that is further down the road but still gives way to some incredible views. Be on the lookout for signs because they will give you plenty of heads up while looking for the pull-offs.
The route links the little town of Lincoln to Conway, taking you through the heart of the White Mountains.
Keep in mind this drive is meant to immerse you into the natural wonder of the White Mountains so you won't find a gas station or any rest stops for the whole duration of the drive. Cell service is nonexistent too so make sure you plan ahead and get lost in the beauty of these incredible mountains.
The drive should take only a little under an hour. This scenic route is popular in the fall but we think it's even better when the trees are covered in snow.
Just look at this stunning scene of snow-covered trees, it is simply magical.
The route loosely follows the Swift River, which offers calm and beauty when covered in snow.
Even a dusting will change the entire landscape, making it somehow more quiet and peaceful.
Whether a sunny day or cloudy, the views of New Hampshire's most famous mountain area can't be beat when you see them on The Kanc.
Isn't the Kancamagus highway in winter gorgeous? The 34-mile drive on the Kancamagus Highway is free and should take about an hour. What are some of your favorite winter drives in New Hampshire?
