When we think of locations around the country where celebrities and other famous figures made their names, you and I might go straight for one of the major cities like New York or Los Angeles. The country's small towns, however, are often where many big names found inspiration and began their careers. As an example, the hamlet of Madison played a part in the life of one of the most famous people from New Hampshire.
American poet, painter, and author E.E. Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but spent much of his life in Madison, New Hampshire.
As a child who spent much of his time outdoors playing, the small town of Madison proved to be a good fit for his upbringing.
In 1899, Cummings' parents purchased Joy Farm near Silver Lake in Madison. The family also had two homes on the eastern shore of the lake.
Even from a young age, Cummings expressed his thoughts through words and art.
Cummings body of work was prolific. He wrote nearly 3,000 poems, four plays, and two autobiographical novels.
From 1926 to 1962, Cummings spent his summers on the lake and experienced a stroke here before his death.
Cummings died in North Conway a day after the stroke in 1962. He is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston, Massachusetts.
Other famous people from New Hampshire have made their way into the greater history of the United States. My favorite part of researching this was realizing just how many. Here are 10 more celebrities from the state's small towns and a local restaurant owned by a well-known filmmaker who lives here.
