New Hampshire is graced with some of the most beautiful scenery and the deepest history in the United States. For fans of road trips, the best way to experience both is behind the wheel. Here are 12 scenic drives throughout the Granite State that can be done in any season.
1. Great North Woods Ride
This 120-mile drive passes through the wilds of northern New Hampshire, affording the opportunity to capture the state's native residents in their natural habitat.
2. Kancamagus Scenic Byway
The state's premier scenic drive is a classic for good reason. Throughout its 34.5 mile distance, you'll be treated to beautiful mountain views and spectacular foliage in the fall.
3. Connecticut River Scenic Byway
This 140-mile ride travels through the Connecticut River Valley along the border of New Hampshire and Vermont, passing through quaint towns and past active farmland.
4. Enfield Shaker Village Scenic Byway
This drive may be short at 3.2 miles, but it is long on history. Travelers can follow the same path that the Enfield Shakers did along Mascoma Lake.
5. Lake Sunapee Scenic Byway
This 39-mile drive makes a loop around Lake Sunapee, linking several villages that have played significant roles in the history of this region.
6. American Independence Byway
This 21-mile loop visits four of New Hampshire's original towns — Exeter, Hampton, Hampton Falls, and Kensington. It's the perfect trip for the history buff.
7. Coastal Byway
This drive of 18.5 miles runs along the state's coastline and provides sweeping views of the Gulf of Maine and visits historic forts.
8. Lakes Region Tour
Circumnavigate Lake Winnipesaukee on this 97-mile loop. Stop for short hikes along the way, visit historic downtowns, and take in the beauty of New Hampshire's largest lake.
9. Robert Frost Byway
This 43-mile drive follows part of a former stagecoach route that connected Boston to Concord over 200 years ago. Robert Frost Farm State Park is located along the Derry stretch.
10. Upper Lamprey Scenic Byway
Located in southeastern New Hampshire, this 50-mile route roughly follows the course of the Lamprey River. It passes through the historic sections of Candia, Deerfield, and Northwood.
11. Monadnock Region Loop
The southwestern region of New Hampshire is dominated by its tallest mountain, Mt. Monadnock. This 80-mile loop drive visits several prominent towns that make up this area of the state.
12. Colonial New Hampshire Seacoast Ride
Another one for the history buffs, this 40-mile drive visits historic sites and state parks along New Hampshire's seacoast.
