We've got nearly two full months of winter ahead of us, not to mention the lingering chill (and typically snow) that follows. And if you're already anxious to get outside, that may seem like an eternity. Luckily, Montana has plenty of winter events and attractions, even for those who steer clear of snow sports. Make room in your schedule for a few of these trips and winter will be over before you know it.
1. Montana Winterfest in Seeley Lake
Winterfest has really expanded in recent years, and this once short festival now lasts for several weeks. Come check out the snow sculptures, events and activities, and beautiful winter scenery until mid-February. The snow sculpture contest is February 17.
2. Whitefish Winter Carnival
If you've never experienced Whitefish in the winter, next weekend's Whitefish Winter Carnival is the perfect opportunity to do so. Not only is the city even more charming when it's dusted with snow, but the events (like ski joring, which combines horses and skiing) will keep you entertained. This year's dates are February 1 - 3.
3. Quinn's Hot Springs Resort in Paradise
Sometimes the best way to beat the winter blues is to enjoy the snowy scenery from the comfort of a piping hot pool. Not only is Quinn's open all winter, but it's offering some great seasonal specials, including a Valentine's Day dinner concert and a Winter Romance lodging package.
4. The Montana Dinner Yurt in Big Sky
This incredible dining adventure is one you can only experience in the winter, so get to Big Sky as soon as possible and check out the Dinner Yurt at Big Sky Resort. You'll take a 15 minute ride on Pisten Bully passenger snowcat through the forest to the backcountry yurt, where you'll enjoy a mouthwatering meal by candlelight. The experience costs $129 for adults, and it's well worth it -- just make sure you dress warm.
5. Explore Fort Benton
Is there ever a time when historic Fort Benton isn't charming? While the current weather in north-central Montana isn't exactly inviting, the city itself remains as welcoming as ever, and you'll love taking a winter walk along the Missouri.
6. Take a snowcoach tour
Would you rather see the winter scenery from the comfort of a coach? You'll find several snowcoach companies like Backcountry Adventures in West Yellowstone, Livingston or Gardiner, all ready to take you to Yellowstone National Park.
7. Enjoy Philipsburg in the off season
Philipsburg has become quite the local tourist destination -- at least in the summer. Right now, it's quiet, peaceful, and the perfect spot for a weekend away. The annual
Brewfest is President's Day weekend, and Philipsburg Brewing Company will host a Mardi Gras event on March 5.
As you can see, winters in Montana are actually amazing -- especially when it snows.
