When the weekend rolls around, some Montanans prefer to spend time in nature, while others might want to enjoy the perks of the city. If you're lucky, you can find a place that offers both. Red Lodge, Montana happens to be a highly underrated weekend getaway destination that combines the best of both worlds.
Red Lodge is located in the Beartooth Mountains, surrounded by the Custer Gallatin National Forest.
It's one of the gateways to Yellowstone National Park, and the perfect place for a small town getaway in Montana.
While this little city is the perfect starting point for an outdoor adventure, you'll definitely want to explore it before you get lost in nature.
For a small town with a population of a tad over 2,500, there's a lot to do. Let's take a look at some things to do in Red Lodge, MT.
Book a room at a historic hostelry.
The Pollard Hotel is a historic building steeped in history. A lot of western legends stayed here, including Calamity Jane. The hotel has been completely renovated, and there's a fantastic pub onsite.
The streets are lined with shops and eateries, including the classic (and always delicious) Red Lodge Cafe.
Another popular dining spot is The Wild Table.
The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary is definitely worth seeing.
The sanctuary provides a lifetime home to non-releasable native Montana wildlife while sharing a message of conservation and education.
If you want to enjoy nature while sticking close to town, just head to Wild Bill Lake.
There's a trail around the lake that will allow you to take it all in while getting some good exercise.
The next time you need a weekend away, give Red Lodge a try.
This quaint little mountain town will steal your heart.
