Perhaps it’s because nearly every town in Montana classifies as "small" by other states’ standards that we have so many amazing people. There’s something special about being raised in a small town—and while plenty of urban dwellers also embody these traits, you’ll find that they’re very commonly found in small town Montana.

1. They’re friendly.

Going days at a time without seeing another human tends to make people pretty excited when they do cross paths with someone.

2. They’re polite.

When you live in a town with only a few hundred people, you can’t really get away with being rude or unkind without people realizing it and calling you on it.

Anyone who grows up in a small town knows you have to get creative with your time, especially as a child. When there aren’t many places for young people to go, you’ve got to use your imagination to create your own fun.

Small towns tend to attract people who want to raise families. And even child-free small town Montanans either love children or have accepted the fact that they’re part of small town living.

Small town Montanans can be some of the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. They aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

Give them a blanket under the stars in summertime, a bonfire in the wintertime and a long drive down the backroads anytime.

9. They will cook you a meal that tastes better than any fine dining experience you’ve ever had.

People who live in small towns don’t always have a lot of restaurant options, so they learn to cook, and they do it well.

10. They know how to celebrate.

Even if they said they hated it at one time and that they couldn’t wait to move away, and even if they did move away… say their hometown’s name and watch their faces light up.
