This 2-3 hour drive takes you through central Montana, encompassing an area of vastly diverse scenery. This area plays an important role in our local history since the Lewis & Clark Expedition traversed through it. The byway also closely follows the Nez Perce National Historic Trail.
This gorgeous and underrated drive passes through the Lewis and Clark National Forest and Little Belt Mountains. Although it's only 71 miles in length (along Highway 89), you should allow several hours for the drive since you'll want to stop and take in the views as much as possible. And if you want to take a detour, the gravel roads criss-crossing the main highway lead to more mountain scenery, trails, campgrounds, and old mines.
Looking for a true country drive? Look no further than this gravel road, which winds through the back country of southwestern Montana. Starting near the tiny community of Dell, you'll cruise through 50 miles of rural territory. This is a great chance to see Montana the way early Native Americans and mountain men did (other than the modern vehicle you'll be in, of course).
If you're heading from Anaconda to Drummond, you're in for a treat. This 63-mile drive takes you past Georgetown Lake and Philipsburg, passing plenty of visually stunning scenery along the way.
If you've been to the Garnet Ghost Town, you've probably noticed how breathtaking the area is. This scenic byway provides a 12-mile journey through the Garnet Mountain Range along Highway 200, and it's a must-see for all Montanans.

Enjoying the Glacier National Park scenic drive is truly one of the best ways to take in the beauty of Montana's diverse landscape. This incredible park has several different routes leading to different areas of the more than one million acres that make up this amazing landscape.
However, there's one that really stands out. Those wondering "can I just drive through Glacier National Park?" will most definitely want to explore this amazing road.
The Going-to-the-Sun Road is about 50 miles long. It crosses the entirety of Glacier National Park and runs from the east entrance to the west entrance.
This incredible scenic drive travels through Logan Pass and across the Continental Divide. It reaches a height of 6,646 feet, which, as you can imagine, provides some absolutely magnificent views.
Wondering about the road's unusual name? The route gets its name from nearby Going-to-the-Sun Mountain. You can easily catch a glimpse of it if you look east when driving through Logan Pass.
This is one route you'll want to take your time with. Along the road, there are quite a few places where you can stop and enjoy the park's many hiking trails.
The drive will take a few hours to explore in its entirety, and you can easily stretch it out to a day-long adventure.

Taking the drive during the summer is ideal, since there's a greater chance that all areas of the road will be open. However, keep in mind that this is also the busiest time of year.
This is certainly one of the most beautiful drives in the western United States, but it's definitely not a secret.
And, while we'd love to keep the journey hidden all for ourselves, it wouldn't be fair to expect others to not take in the incredible views from the park.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road is open year-round near the park's West Entrance, but if winter conditions are bad, the entirety of the road may not be open until late June, or often a little later. Be sure to keep an eye on the official National Park Service website for current conditions and closures. As of summer 2023, all vehicles that are accessing the road are required to have a reservation during peak hours.
