Livingston, Montana isn't exactly off the grid. It's only about 30 miles east of Bozeman, and it's easily accessible from I-90. That being said, it doesn't always get the same fanfare as some of our more popular destinations... but this funky little town is worth exploring.
Livingston sits on the banks of the Yellowstone River between the Crazy and Absaroka mountain ranges.
It was founded in 1882, and it still maintains an Old West charm.
These days, you'll find a large number of writers and artists living here, along with ranchers.
In fact, Livingston is home to more writers than any other city in America.
It takes a certain type of person to enjoy life in Livingston. While the summers are gorgeous, winters are always brutal.
And the wind can be downright ridiculous at times.
Still, there's no denying that this city is delightful.
The historic downtown is home to eclectic shops, galleries, and eateries.
Farmgirl Pizzeria and Bakery on Main Street is a must-see.
The hand-tossed pizzas are exceptional, and the baked goods are addictive.
If you're looking for nightlife, places like the Whiskey Creek Saloon & Casino never disappoint.
This venue dates back to 1890.
The Annual Livingston Roundup on the 4th of July embodies the classic cowboy culture Livingston was founded on...
... while the newer, hip spots like Chadz coffee shop on Main add to the city's funky culture.
In addition to being a great place to grab a latte, Chadz is decked out in vintage decor.
Livingston really is the perfect blend of classic Montana culture and modern whimsy. Here are some other charming small towns to explore.
