Montana state pride is real. In a 2014 Gallup poll, the Treasure State ranked highest for pride, with 77% of residents claiming it as the best place to live (and we wonder what’s up with those other 23%). Whether you spend your entire life in Montana or you leave for awhile, you know in your heart that the Last Best Place will always be home.
Here are 13 reasons to remind you of why there’s no place like Montana:
1. “Wide open spaces” doesn’t even begin to describe it.
It’s called Big Sky Country for a reason. When you feel claustrophobic and you need to breathe, you can come home to Montana.
2. Our history is fascinating (and important).
Dinosaurs. The gold rush. Native American culture. A lot has happened on Montana soil since the beginning of time, and it’s nice to know that born-and-raised Montanans come from a long line of strong people.
3. Our seasons are amazing… all four of them.
You might experience some weather-related shock if you leave Montana. We embrace all four seasons here and we appreciate getting to experience them. So the next time you’re disappointed by another mild winter or humid summer, come on home to the Treasure State.
4. The people are the best.
Remember when you were growing up and you’d see people wave at your parents while they were driving, even if your parents didn’t know them? That still happens in Montana. Eye contact and friendly smiles still exist.
5. The scenery is diverse.
Montana has plains, badlands, mountains, and lush forests. There’s truly something for everyone.
6. There will always be new places to explore.
Even the most seasoned hiker will always have more trails to find. Even a lifelong Montanan will have a "bucket list" or places to check out.
7. Let’s face it, they know how to cook a steak.
The Edgar Bar, The Land of Magic Steakhouse (pictured above), The Montana Club… no offense to those other states, but no one grills a steak like a Montanan.
8. The sense of pride.
State pride. Hometown pride. Pride in their homes. pride in their businesses. The people in Montana take care of their things, and it shows.
9. The parks are unreal.
Montana state parks are beautiful, and Glacier National Park is so incredible that it draws visitors from all over the world.
10. The wildlife is abundant.
If you move away, you might miss seeing deer on your morning commute and watching rabbits hop through your backyard.
11. The lack of sales tax is awesome.
There are a few resort taxes to contend with, but for the most part, the price you see is the price you pay.
12. The way that it smells.
The crisp winter air, the fresh, new scent after a spring rain… you know exactly what we’re talking about.
13. That starry night sky.
There’s just nothing like it.
Montana will always be home because of all the amazing things it has to offer. In fact, we happen to think it's quite underrated.
