Less than an hour's drive from most of Kansas City sits a charming town that's left out of a lot of hype. It's got that small-town Missouri hospitality that you just don't find everywhere these days, and a solid day's worth of events to enjoy while you're there. The features of this awesome town are just too good to ignore, but have you ever been there to see for yourself? If not, let's check out what they have to offer! What better time for a day trip than now?
Welcome to the amazing Excelsior Springs, where you'll find beautiful murals like this one, and more great attractions.
They have a population around 11,000, so it's much smaller than the Kansas City area without feeling like a complete ghost town.
One of their most popular attractions is The Elms, an allegedly haunted hotel.
It's a great place to stay, if you don't mind a possible paranormal experience. The spa is very relaxing and non-haunted, if that helps.
Next up is the Excelsior Springs Museum, where you'll find plenty of local history.
The museum is in both the old Clay County bank and the Francis Hotel. Inside, you can see an extensive record of businesses and events from the area. It's like stepping back in time, through a series of photographs.
Afterwards, you'd be smart to grab a bite at Opportunity Cafe, where you'll feel right at home in a rustic setting with a fresh coffee and lunch.
They're open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm, so make sure you get there in time!
Kansas Citians really enjoy their water fountains, but did you know they have a Hall of Waters here in Excelsior Springs?
It was built in 1937 as a "natural spring" health resort, but the building is now mostly empty. However, the Art Deco style still survives and you can still see the longest water bar in the world, even though it's no longer in use. They do hope to reopen the water bar in the future. One can dream!
Afterwards, take a tour of one of the local vineyards, like Fence Stile.
Their wine is so refreshing, and a sunset behind the vines is to die for. They also have tasting room events and Fire Pit Fridays to enjoy.
Afterwards, you should totally check out this tasty taco trail right here in Kansas City. Now that's a trail I could happily follow!
