On the outside, Kansas City looks like a great place to be if you like Worlds of Fun and fountains everywhere. That alone might make people want to move to Kansas City. However, we're actually a diverse area full of different communities and plenty of non-theme park activities. That doesn't mean we aren't the best place to be, however. In fact, it's just the opposite. We love where we live! Here's a few things that everyone should know before they move here.
1. There really are around 2 million people that live in the KC metro area.
For some reason, people think that we aren't a big place because we're in the Midwest, but 2 million is a lot, especially if you happen to be in the city for a big event. We aren't NYC, but we're still pretty big.
2. We have three seasons: boiling, freezing, and road construction.
What you might not know is that road construction season can last for years. We just consider it a state of being at this point, really.
3. Don't knock it 'till you try it.
Burnt ends are food, and they're not what you'd expect. In fact, you might just love them at first bite.
4. Don't swim in the river. Just don't.
It's gross, and you might even get sick. Avoiding it is the best option here.
5. You probably shouldn't whine about how far an ocean is.
We've got plenty of lakes in both Kansas and Missouri that you're welcome to enjoy just like you would the ocean. Except without any sharks.
6. You can definitely whine about getting lost.
Much of the city is easy to navigate, but there are areas that easily leave you lost without any idea where you've been or how you got there. It happens to locals too!
7. The crime rate is probably higher than you expect.
The probability of you being a victim of property crime is 1 in 23, and we've also got one of the highest motor vehicle theft rates in the country. It's not always rainbows here, but as long as you take precautions, you'll be fine.
8. We do apologize for the weather...
We can't help that sometimes it goes from sleet to sun in a matter of hours.
9. ...but we won't apologize for how much we love barbecue.
We can't and we won't. We love barbecue and there's nothing you can do except join us.
19. Don't stay cooped up in the city all year.
There are plenty of nature centers, parks with local wildlife that deserves to be noticed. Kansas City is also surrounded by small towns that are full of history and deserve a visit.
11. We'll accept you, no matter where you came from.
We have people from everywhere living here in KC, so you'll fit right in, no matter what. There's something here for everyone.
12. You'll never find a place as perfect as here.
We might not have an ocean or mountains, but you'll find that we have plenty of wonderful things to make up for it if stop and take a moment to look.
What is something you'd tell people moving to Kansas City? Feel free to share with us in the comments below!
Of course, once you've been here for a little while, you'll pick up some of the habits we've grown to love having.
