You don’t have to travel far for a wonderful weekend away. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that you don’t even have to leave our state. Instead, all you have to do is head to Hattiesburg. Boasting a great mix of amenities, it makes an excellent weekend getaway in Mississippi. Read on for some fun things to do in Hattiesburg, one of our favorite Mississippi small towns.
One of the state’s largest cities by population, Hattiesburg is home to about 49,000 residents. It’s probably most known, though, as the home of the University of Southern Mississippi.
Located in the heart of Hattiesburg, the 300-acre campus features several notable landmarks, including an All-American Rose Garden.
But don’t assume Hattiesburg is a typical college town.
Offering the best of both worlds, Hattiesburg is the perfect mix of old and new. It’s got a rich history, along with an undeniable creative vibe and engaging atmosphere.
The city actually has a lot to offer weekend visitors, including a bustling live music scene, pop-up art exhibits, shops, and great eateries, too.
Downtown is known as the “heartbeat of Hattiesburg,” making it a can’t-miss during a weekend visit. Brimming with historic charm, downtown is filled with compelling architecture. It's also filled with great sites.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry; several walking tours wind through downtown, including the Hatties(BURGER) Trail.
Great museums are also among Hattiesburg's perks.
Eureka School Museum, Hattiesburg Historical Society and Museum, and the African American Military History Museum are just a few of the museums visitors can explore.
And though Hattiesburg is one of the state's bigger cities, it has plenty to offer nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers.
In addition to the city's own Town Square Park, Hattiesburg is home to Paul B. Johnson State Park.
Dubbed "a gateway to a natural wonderland," it offers an idyllic reprieve from city life.
Hattiesburg is also home to one of the state's only zoos.
Though not huge, the 12-acre zoo houses more than 100 species of animals from around the world. It also includes a train, carousel, café, splash pad, and high ropes adventure course.
As far as lodging options go, Hattiesburg delivers in that department, too.
The city boasts accommodations of all kinds, including a tiny house resort. Fittingly dubbed the Longleaf Piney Resort, it's located along the 44-mile Longleaf Trace.
