Think you live in a small town? Well, you may want to reconsider that. It is no surprise that Mississippi is filled with small towns; however, just how small may come as a shock. The state actually has hundreds of towns that have less than a thousand residents (yes, you read that right, hundreds). So, check out the list below for twelve of the smallest towns in Mississippi.
1. Coffeeville
Named after well-known farmer and military leader John Coffee, this small town has a population of almost 900.
Address: Coffeeville, MS, 38922
2. Sumner
Many are familiar with the story of Emmitt Till, but what most don’t realize is that Sumner’s courthouse was the site of the infamous 1955 murder trial of the teen’s suspected killers.
Address: Sumner, MS, 38957
3. Vaiden
Incorporated in 1860, the town was named for local doctor and philanthropist Dr. Cowles Mead Vaiden. Originally, the town was filled with prominent citizens such as doctors, lawyers, and statesmen, and, because of such, Vaiden was said to be the wealthiest town of its size in Mississippi at the time.
Address: Vaiden, MS, 39176
4. State Line
Located between Wayne and Greene counties, the interestingly-named town has a population of just under 600.
Address: State Line, MS, 39362
5. Snow Lake Shores
One of the best small towns in Mississippi, Snow Lake Shores was originally established as a private resort community and wasn’t incorporated as a town until 1996. The current population is about 300 but that number normally triples during the summer months.
Address: Snow Lake Shores, MS, 38603
6. Lula
Surprisingly enough, this small town of only about 300 residents is home to a rather large casino and hotel - the Isle of Capri.
Address: Lula, MS, 38644
7. Merigold
The tiny town of Merigold only has about 664 residents, but it's packed with southern charm. When hunger strikes, there's no better place to go than Crawdad's. People come from all around just to try their scrumptious crawfish and steaks. The relaxed atmosphere will make you feel right at home.
Address: Merigold, MS, 38759
8. Gloster
With a population of about 950, Gloster may be small but that doesn’t mean residents are lacking when it comes to things to do, making it one of the best towns in Mississippi to live. Located in Amite County, the town is conveniently located near a number of parks and attractions including Percy Quin State Park, Homochitto National Forest, the Gloster Arboretum, and much more.
Address: Gloster, MS, 39638
9. Duck Hill
Duck Hill may have fewer than 900 residents but that doesn’t mean fun can’t be had. One of the best tiny towns in Mississippi, it's home to the annual Grassroots Blues Festival.
Address: Duck Hill, MS, 38925
10. Cruger
Prominent blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter Robert Curtis Smith was born in this small Mississippi town. Just how small you ask? Cruger has less than 400 residents.
Address: Cruger, MS, 38924
11. Blue Springs
Originally just a railroad stop, the town of Blue Springs has flourished into a modern community thanks in part to a Toyota Plant moving into town. Boasting simple living, Blue Springs seems like a picture-perfect, quintessential small town you’d see on television.
Address: Blue Springs, MS, 38828
12. Alligator
Home to a little more than 200 residents, Alligator is doing something right as the town is the birthplace of several notable people including professional football player Tony Lydell "Alligator" Bennett, author Jack Butler, and television producer and director Fred Coe.
Address: Alligator, MS, 38720
Seeing how small some of these towns are made me realize how loosely I have been using the term "small town." Did this change your perspective of what qualifies as a small town?
