With populations of 10,000 or less, these towns may be small in size but they definitely deliver when it comes to providing views and scenery that are nothing short of amazing. So, if you're looking for new places to visit this year, these 9 picture-perfect towns should be at the top of your list.
1. Wiggins
Originally named Niles City, it wasn’t until 1896 that Wiggins received its current moniker. Today, residents of one of Mississippi’s fastest growing communities enjoy a high quality of life, which is only further enriched by Wiggins’ close proximity to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
2. Hamilton
Located east of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, this small town is home to approximately 500 residents. Proving that big things come in small packages, Hamilton is actually the site of the third largest titanium dioxide manufacturing operation in the entire world.
3. Carthage
Boasting a friendly community and hometown atmosphere, Carthage is a quintessential small town, perfect for everyone from vacationers to retirees.
4. Shuqualak
Located in Noxubee County, this small town’s name, which is pronounced "shugga lock," is Choctaw in origin. Several locations in Shuqualak, including most of the downtown area, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
5. Taylor
The epitome of picture-perfect, Taylor is the type of town you’d expect to see in a movie – a trait that wasn’t lost on William Faulkner, who referred to Taylor as "a postage stamp of native soil." The small town is big on history and culture and has become known for its famous food and impressive music and art scenes.
6. Water Valley
Water Valley is a quintessential small southern town where everybody knows everybody, but it’s also a cultural melting pot thanks to a bustling Main Street, an abundance of mouthwatering restaurants, historic homes, and an amazing art scene that is comparable to that of a larger city.
7. Causeyville
Causeyville may be located just a few miles from the city of Meridian but that hasn’t diminished its small town charm. In fact, the town is home to the Causeyville General Store, which was originally opened in the late 1800s and still operates on a limited basis.
8. Kosciusko
This small town, which has just under 8,000 residents, is most commonly associated with being the birthplace of Oprah Winfrey. Aside from its most famous resident, Kosciusko has numerous desirable qualities, including being just one mile from the Natchez Trace Parkway as well as a part of the Mississippi Blues Trail.
9. Woodville
Tucked away in the southwest corner of the state, Woodville is by far one of Mississippi’s best kept secrets. The charming town includes a lovely historic district and is home to the Clark Creek Nature Area – a 700-acre area that is highlighted by over 50 waterfalls that range in size from 10’ to more than 30’ in height.
