Typically, small towns aren’t pedestrian-friendly. However, that’s not always the case. Take Natchez, for example. It has around 15,000 residents, yet it is touted as one of the most walkable cities in the South. And it’s easy to see how Natchez earned the distinction – there are delights around every corner.
Natchez has several claims to fame. Not only is it known as the “biscuit capital of the world,” but it’s the “bed and breakfast capital of the South.”
The city’s accolades don’t end there, though. It’s also "one of the most walkable cities in the South," according to Deep South Magazine.
It’s plain to see why Natchez earned the distinction. In a concentrated area, you’ll find everything from museums, shops, and eateries to panoramic views of the Mighty Mississippi.
Plus, the city boasts a number of self-guided walking tours.
Historic sites and museums are abundant in Natchez and can pretty much be found along any one of the city’s walking tours.
Block after block, there are amazing historic sites to explore. Stanton Hall, Longwood, and the William Johnson House are just a few spots history buffs won’t want to miss.
On Main Street, there are galleries, eateries, and unique shops, like Darby’s, which sells everything from gifts and décor to some of the "best fudge in America.”
There’s just as much to explore off of Main Street. Venture off to the surrounding streets, and you’ll be met with more must-visit spots, including Natchez Brewing Co.
The historic district, Natchez Under-the-Hill, also has a lot to offer to pedestrians.
In addition to dining and shopping, the area boasts incredible views of the Mississippi River.
Natchez Under-the-Hill is also where you’ll find Bluff Trail, a walking path that traces the city’s famous bluffs, leading straight to Under-the-Hill Saloon, a 200-year-old watering hole.
