While it's true that you're more likely to find a truly delicious place in a large city, there are plenty of great restaurants in smaller towns. These 10 small towns in Minnesota prove just that. When you make a trip to them, you'll realize that they have some seriously tasty restaurants that are more than worth the trip.
1. Lanesboro
Lanesboro has less than 1,000 people, but it's got plenty of food to share with visitors. As the Bed & Breakfast capital of Minnesota, this town is used to showing hospitality. High Court Pub, Intermission, and Pedal Pushers Cafe are just a few of this tiny town's many culinary offerings.
2. Ely
Here's another small town with a big reputation. Being on the edge of the Boundary Waters, Ely attracts its share of visitors. More than a few restaurants have popped up to accommodate them. The Chocolate Moose is an ever popular choice. Other great restaurants include Ely Steak House and the Boathouse Brewpub & Restaurant.
3. Stillwater
Stillwater draws people in because of its cute downtown and proximity to the St. Croix River. But this charming town has more than a few delicious restaurants. Be sure to try Oasis Cafe, Domacin, Chilkoot Cafe & Cyclery, Lolo American Kitchen... The list goes on. You're probably going to need to take more than one trip to sample all of Stillwater's great restaurants.
4. New Ulm
New Ulm is a small town with a strong German heritage - and restaurants to match. Try Veigel's Kaiserhoff for delicious food with a German twist. Other great options are Lola - An American Bistro, Ulmer Cafe, and Turner Hall.
5. Grand Marais
Grand Marais may be tiny, but its restaurants crank out amazing food. Anyone who's ventured that far north has probably been to the Angry Trout, but there are other options as well. My Sister's Place, South of the Border Cafe, and Hughie's Tacos are delicious choices for those who want to try something new.
6. Wayzata
Most people wouldn't think of a small suburb as a place to get a great meal, but the small town of Wayzata defies that expectation. Sushi Fix grows more popular every day, and 6Smith is a delicious restaurant with an amazing atmosphere.
7. Albert Lea
Albert Lea has less than 20,000 people, yet it has a few delicious restaurants that are worth the trek down to southern Minnesota. B&B Cafe and Elbow Room are local favorites that pack intense flavor into every single dish.
8. Clearwater
Clearwater is home to a few restaurants highly rated by visitors. One is Nelson Brothers Restaurant, an amazing breakfast spot located within the Clearwater Travel Plaza. The Kettle is another highly rated spot in this small town.
9. Sandstone
Sandstone is a small town known for the beautiful Banning State Park, but there are a few popular restaurants that are definitely worth a stop. Some of the top-rated spots in town are Jan & Gary's Country Dining and Amy's Country Cafe. With names like that, you know you're going to get something delicious.
10. Rushford
In rural Rushford, you might not expect there to be many places to eat. But according to reviews, there are a few great restaurants to choose from. Norsland Lefse and the Creamery are two restaurants with a great reputation. Also try Burdey's Cafe in nearby Peterson - Howard's Mess is delicious.
