Here in the Twin Cities, we are privy to some of the prettiest spots in Minnesota. From Minnehaha Falls to Fort Snelling, the Mississippi River to Theodore Wirth Regional Park, the Twin Cities are brimming with wonderful things to see and do. But one downside to each of those things? They're so great that they attract huge crowds. Luckily, there are great places to go throughout Minneapolis - and the entirety of the Twin Cities - that are a little more quiet. Just across the river in St. Paul, one of the most isolated spots is also one of the most beautiful.
Shadow Falls Park is right on the Mississippi River in St. Paul. You'll find it on Mississippi River Boulevard.
Created in 1902, the park has always been a nice spot for enjoying a day outdoors.
For one thing, it offers great views of the Mississippi River. Often, you'll see boats taking leisurely rides along the river.
The bridge in the distance also offers a view that is unique to the Twin Cities.
A large platform at the park offers the best views of the river. You can walk down a short path to take in the view from atop a rocky cliff.
Many trails crisscross the hillside. If you choose to hike them, you'll be amazed at just how quiet this spot is for being in the busy city.
If you follow the trail to the left of the viewing platform, you'll eventually find a deep, smooth gorge. It is possible - though difficult - to climb to the bottom. We recommend taking in the view from the top if you're not up for a challenging trek.
If you turn right, you're headed toward the falls.
As you make your way down the path, you'll hear the rushing water before you see it. The canopy of trees will make the trail seem dark and secluded.
The trail is not paved, so take precautions if you choose to walk it. Parts of it are rutted with roots and holes. Depending on when you visit, it can also be quite muddy.
The patch circles the top of a deep gorge.
Through the trees, you'll see Shadow Falls drop many feet to the ground. The falls is bigger in the spring, but you can visit throughout the summer and fall as well.
And chances are, no one else will be there when you are. Shadow Falls is one of the most secluded spots in the Twin Cities.
