Our many small towns are some of Minnesota's greatest treasures. Each offers a special community with plenty to see and do. Whether you love nature or history or small-town restaurants, there's bound to be a town for you. But what if you're looking for a more unique destination to explore? Among the many special spots around Minnesota, Longville sticks out as perhaps the quirkiest town in the state.
This small town is located in northern Minnesota, about 50 miles north of Brainerd.
Though only about 150 people call Longville home, the town draws tourists in droves during the summer months.
The biggest draws of the area are its lakes, which are great for fishing, boating, and just relaxing.
From Girl Lake west of town to the deep waters of Long Lake to the north, many cabins and resorts dot area shores.
Despite its size and remote location, Longville also has many annual events, including car shows, music events, and fireworks displays.
The town even has events in the winter, like a February ice bocce tournament and winter fireworks in early March.
But by far the biggest draw - and Longville's claim to fame - are its turtle races.
As the Turtle Racing Capital of the World, it shuts down Main Street every Wednesday of the summer for turtle-themed festivities.
Crowds numbering in the hundreds gather to take part in the 50-year-old tradition. Then, games and contests round out the weekly event.
Once festivities are over, it's back to the lake! There is just the right balance of activity and relaxation in this quirky northern town.
