In every region of Minnesota, dozens of small towns stand as examples of what makes the Land of 10,000 Lakes so great. Some are full of fun attractions, others are surrounded by natural beauty, and some even offer surprisingly delicious food. But there is one town where the greatest draw is just how peaceful it is. Askov, Minnesota, is a quiet town that will calm you down in an instant.
Askov is a tiny town in east central Minnesota, nearly 100 miles north of the Twin Cities. It boasts a population of just 364 people.
Passing through, it doesn't look like much more than a wide place in the road. But this little town has a certain charm all its own.
Tucked along the quiet streets are several great restaurants and picturesque buildings.
You'll want to pay attention to the street signs especially. Askov has a Danish heritage. Most of its street names are in Danish, with an English translation listed below.
The town's interesting culture doesn't end there. One of its most popular events is the annual Rutabaga Festival, complete with food, fun, and even a parade.
Outside of town, the gorgeous Banning State Park is nearby. One hike along any of its many hiking trails is sure to bring you peace and serenity.
The Kettle River - part of which rushes through Banning - is also nearby. Thrill seekers often kayak its rapids, but it's also fun to observe it from afar.
