One of the charming small towns in Minnesota that's worth visiting is New Ulm. With its namesake in Germany, New Ulm, Minnesota's roots are steeped in German heritage.
More a small city than a small town, New Ulm is as charming as can be. It's easy to see why more than 13,000 people call it home.
New Ulm has German roots and is actually named after the city of Ulm in south Germany. Around town, you will find several attractions that point to its German culture.
Located at 327 North Minnesota Street is New Ulm's very own Glockenspiel. Towering at 45 feet, its 37 bells chime several times throughout the day.
You can see the clock's 12 figures dancing around in a circle at those times.
Standing at 102 feet at 10 Monument Street is a monument dedicated to Hermann the Cherusker (a.k.a. Hermann the German), who was responsible for liberating Germany from Rome in 9 A.D. Visitors can climb to the top of the monument for a fee on certain days of the week.
Then there is the August Schell Brewery which was started in 1860 by a German immigrant named August Schell.
In addition to this German craft brewery, this Minnesota small town is home to Morgan Creek Vineyards, which makes German, French, and American style wines.
Flandrau State Park is a great place in town to enjoy the great outdoors. This 1,000-acre park boasts woods, grasslands, marshlands, a campground, and a sand-bottom pool.
New Ulm offers numerous attractions and sights for everyone to enjoy. It's absolutely worthwhile to take a day or weekend trip here sometime.
