Across the United States, there are standout cities in every region that are well worth a visit. If you love to take in beautiful scenery, meet incredible people, and eat delicious food, you should consider a vacation to Minneapolis. Not only do we Minneapolitans think it's pretty great, but the city was also recently listed as one of the best vacation destinations in the world by the Wall Street Journal. Here's why we think you should consider paying the City of Lakes a visit:
1. There are 13 lakes in the city - and thousands more around the state.
From Lake Harriet to Lake of the Isles and beyond, Minneapolis is the City of Lakes. There is something to do on those lakes in every season of the year. From fishing to sailing to swimming, Minneapolis lakes will not disappoint. And if you prefer a quieter lakeside hangout, there are thousands more scattered across the rest of Minnesota.
2. The Twin Cities are full of beautiful parks.
Because of all those beautiful lakes of Minneapolis, the city - as well as nearby St. Paul - are filled with beautiful parks. Minnehaha is among the most popular, with its large urban waterfall. Head over to St. Paul for smaller parks like Indian Mounds or Hidden Falls. There is no end to outdoor activities here.
3. The city is full of hidden treasures.
The most popular parks, like Minnehaha, are must-see places in Minneapolis. But there are plenty of hidden treasures, too. These green oases are fantastic ways to step away from the busy city and find some peace in nature.
4. Many of Minnesota's biggest tourist attractions are nearby.
Minnesotans have a love/hate relationship with the Mall of America, but it remains one of the state's most popular tourist attractions. Between the dozens of shops and restaurants, the waterpark, and the aquarium - to name just a few activities - a visit to this mall could easily be an all day experience.
5. Museums offer interesting glimpses of local culture.
The Walker Art Center is a fantastic place to see contemporary art, and the nearby Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is an icon of the city. Other great museum options include the free-to-visit Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the American Swedish Institute, and Mill City Museum.
6. A live show is never hard to come by.
First Avenue is an icon of Minneapolis, having hosted may big name acts in its long history. But beyond music venues, Minneapolis hosts several great places to take in a live theater experience. The Guthrie is just one world-renowned option, but there are many others as well.
7. It's one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country.
If you love exploring new places on two wheels, you'll love Minneapolis. It has been consistently ranked among the best bike cities in the country - and the world. Bike lanes make it easy to get around, and many other paths crisscross the city for easy and safe access. Even better, if you are traveling without a bike, there are many bike rental stations throughout the Twin Cities.
8. There's an amazing meal around every corner.
While Minneapolis has fewer options than the nation's biggest cities, it can still hold its own as far as amazing food is concerned. If you're interested in fine dining, the city plays host to many acclaimed restaurants. And if you prefer something more low key, locals can point you in the direction of their favorite local diners and cafes.
9. Beer lovers will be right at home here.
Minnesota is home to many breweries, the majority of them concentrated in Minneapolis. Taking the time to visit a few of them during your vacation is highly recommended. It's a great way to interact with locals and drink up the local flavor.
10. It's not that far from the North Shore.
While there is a lot to do in the Twin Cities, Minnesota is a large state with hundreds of other attractions. In fact, many Minnesotans would argue that you haven't really seen the state until you've visited northern Minnesota. In particular, the North Shore is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places in the state. If you have a car and a little time to kill, head up to Lake Superior. There is no shortage of activities along its shores.
This city offers so much to do, it's definitely worthy of a vacation. If you love getting outside, exploring nature, and having adventures in a new city, add Minneapolis to your vacation bucket list.
