You've been wanting to get away to that island vacation, but you never seem to be able to get it together. The cost for a trip to some tropical resort alone is enough to keep landlocked and wistfully wishing.
Thing is, even though Michigan is hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean doesn't mean you can't get that island getaway sooner than you thought. Come summer, there will be plenty of opportunities to discover (or rediscover) some of the best islands around - right here in your own backyard.
1. Mackinac Island
This popular UP destination on Lake Huron whisks visitors back to a time when the automobile was not a part of our everyday lives.
The island allows for leisurely strolls by foot, carriage, or bicycle - and some fresh air, as seen here.
2. Beaver Island
About 50 miles away from Mackinac Island on Lake Michigan sits Beaver Island. This island is known more for attracting visitors who want a stronger connection with nature.
3. Belle Isle
Then there's Belle Isle, a 982-acre island park that is technically owned by the city of Detroit, but is actually managed as a state park.
4. North Manitou Island
This piece of island wilderness is ideal for the outdoorsy type looking to get away from the bustle of the city. Located on Lake Michigan, this small island enjoys vast sand dunes (thanks to the Sleeping Bear Dunes nearby), ghost towns, and inland lakes.
5. South Manitou Island
Also a part of the same island chain, this place features layers of tilted limestone, miles of pebble beaches, and an old growth forest of white cedars. Visitors come here for camping, hiking, and exploring its old lighthouse.
6. Grosse Ile
Straddled between the U.S. and Canada on the Detroit River is where you'll find this tiny island township. It's the second most populated island in Michigan and boasts a small airport, perfect for aspiring pilots.
7. Little Presque Isle
Not exactly an island per se as the name implies, this destination is one of the most beautiful pieces of prime lakeshore on Lake Superior. With sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and pristine views, it's a place not to be missed.
8. Isle Royale
This is the largest of some 450 islands that makes up Isle Royale National Park. It's one of the most remote places in the country, so if you're looking to break away from society for a spell, this is your place.
What a trip, and you didn't have to travel far at all! Tell us though, where are your favorite Michigan islands?
