While the cold weather can add difficulty to your everyday life, it shouldn’t prevent you from heading out for a few adventures throughout the season. When you’re ready to explore some of Metro Detroit’s coziest towns, check out these nine lovely locales.
1. Lexington
This Sanilac County gem is ideal for visitors who enjoy combining manmade fun with the beauty of the great outdoors. Situated along the shoreline of Lake Huron, Lexington offers shopping and dining options that will surely charm you. On a cold winter evening, stop by and enjoy a performance at Lexington Village Theatre or sip a beer at the Village Pub. With just over 1,000 residents, this small town is tiny yet delightful.
2. Manchester
History buffs will enjoy exploring Manchester, a village near Detroit that was first founded in the 1820s and boasts a storied past. Tucked away along the beautiful River Raisin, this village is famous for its annual Chicken Broil event and its abundance of historical locations. Check out a blacksmith museum, gather for drinks at the cozy Black Sheep Tavern, or simply stroll through downtown. You’ll be truly enamored.
3. Metamora
If you’re looking for a truly tiny town, Metamora fits the bill, housing a population of just 600 full-time residents. When you come to Metamora, you’d be remiss not to check out the famous White Horse Inn. 4. Dexter
Upon arriving in this town along the banks of the Huron River, you’ll quickly feel like you’ve landed in a picturesque village from a fairy tale. Dexter features an old-fashioned town square with a variety of shops and eateries where you can warm up, along with a variety of outdoorsy options that remain gorgeous in every season. Whether you’re walking at nearby Hudson Mills Metropark or doing some belated holiday shopping, you’ll find something to love in this tiny community.
5. Milford
Kick off your visit to Milford with a stop at one of its multiple coffee shops, where you’ll find lots of hot beverages to jumpstart your day. We recommend The Proving Grounds for those seeking a real local gem. Next, shop ‘til you drop at Hoot Gift Gallery or another option in the downtown area. By the time you leave Milford, you’ll be warmed, heart and soul.
6. New Baltimore
You might not be familiar with this small town, but New Baltimore is well worth exploring throughout the year. During winter months, you’ll be particularly fond of the recently rejuvenated downtown area. Grab lunch and coffee at The Little Mustard Seed Cafe or heat things up at Bad Brad’s BBQ. The faces are friendly, the town sits on the shores of Anchor Bay, and the town itself is quaint - what’s not to love?
7. Berkley
This one-time farm-focused community has blossomed into a truly fantastic destination near Detroit, with an active downtown that hosts annual events and showcases some of the area’s best attractions. Do a bit of shopping at Catching Fireflies, bask in diner-style charm at Coco Fairfield’s, or indulge in some of the state’s most marvelous mac ‘n cheese at Vinsetta Garage. Once you visit Berkeley, you won’t want to leave.
8. Frankenmuth
You’ve surely heard of Frankenmuth, but have you made the trek to see its many attractions for yourself? If you’d like Christmas to last forever, you’ll be thrilled by the gigantic selection at Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, a year-round holiday store. Appreciate plenty of Alpine architecture before digging into a hot chicken dinner from the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Does it get much better than this?
9. Algonac
This underrated little town is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet while cozying up with loved ones along the waterfront. Situated on the shores of St. Clair River, Algonac houses just over 4,000 residents and features a variety of hidden gems to explore. Enjoy a cozy winter campout at Algonac State Park, dine at Algonac Flaming Grill, or bundle up for a walk along the water. You’ll love this little town in no time at all.
