Sudbury, Massachusetts is a perfectly charming New England town with plenty of colonial history and beautiful fall foliage. Close enough to Boston to be accessible to urban dwellers yet far enough away to feel like true countryside, this small town is packed with fall-friendly activities.
Longfellow’s Wayside Inn is the perfect place to start off or wrap up your visit to Sudbury. It’s the oldest operating inn in the country and has been run by the Howe family for generations. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow penned the classic Tales of a Wayside Inn in 1863, forever immortalizing the charming colonial inn.
Cozy up to the fire with a cup of warm cider or enjoy the spectacular fall foliage that surrounds the inn on a stroll across the grounds.
The Wayside Inn is also home to a perfectly picturesque grist mill that looks like something stolen right out of a postcard. It's a gorgeous spot to spread out with a picnic of apple cider doughnuts.
Of course, autumn is the spookiest season and Sudbury has plenty of creepy places to explore. Check out the Revolutionary War Cemetery, where long-dead soldiers are said to prowl after dark. It’s also a beautiful place for a quiet walk in the crisp fall air.
If enjoying the great outdoors is more your style, check out, be sure to spend some time in the Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury. Their Red Maple Trail includes a boardwalk through absolutely stunning fall foliage and is a very easy walk for all ages.
