Massachusetts is a state filled with historic sites and natural coastal and mountain beauty. While numerous locations around the state can be considered magical, there's one town that looks like it was ripped out of the pages of a fairytale. Welcome to Tyringham, a tiny picturesque town in Berkshire County that almost looks too pretty to be real. Whether you only have a few hours or can spend an entire weekend, you'll find plenty of things to do in Tyringham, Massachusetts.
Tyringham was established in 1739 and settled by the Shakers in 1780. It was a mill town until the 1840s, although its economy was also centered around agriculture. Over time, people left and today there are approximately 300 residents. While it's a rural community, there's plenty of stunning beauty to explore.
For instance, Tyringham Cobble offers 206 acres of pure natural and geological magic. In the 18th century, it was part of a farm owned by the Shakers. By the 1930s, a group of conservationists known as "The Cobblers" purchased the acreage. Since then it's been saved from development. The Trustees acquired the land in 1963.
You'll find some wonderful hiking trails at Tyringham Cobble. Go for a stroll through the forest and orchards, and find Rabbit Rock. This unique wonder is actually an oddly-shaped rock formation that looks quite otherworldly.
The views from the top are nothing short of spectacular. The hills, forests, and rural landscape of the Tyringham Valley will surely take your breath away.
Another place you'll want to explore is Ashintully Gardens. This 120-acre estate is filled with gardens, sculptures, and ruins of a Georgian-style mansion that once stood here. Take a leisurely walk along trails and over footbridges on the property that will make you feel like you're in a storybook.
Santarella is known as "Tyringham's Gingerbread House" and when you see it, you'll most like be reminded of "Hansel and Gretel." If you've ever dreamed of staying in a house that looks like this, good news - you can rent it out on Airbnb!
Santarella actually has three buildings you can spend the night in. The Rustic Farmhouse, the Enchanted Turret, and the Grand Fairytale Turret are all fun to explore. You can create your own enchanted fairy tale with a stay here!
This is certainly one of the most wonderful little Massachusetts towns!
