There's nothing like taking a long drive through the country to clear your head and soak up some natural beauty. Massachusetts is covered with scenic roads that are destinations themselves. From coastal routes to scenic drives in western Massachusetts, there's quite a bit of variety in each of these journeys, too. Take a look at these options for country drives in Massachusetts and choose the one that speaks to you. I know the scenic drives near me are perfect for refreshing my day and reminding me why I love this state so much. We bet the same will be true for you and, undoubtedly, the routes on this list are some of the best driving roads in Massachusetts.
1. Mohawk Trail Scenic Byway
This byway runs for about 65 miles through some of the most picturesque scenery in the state. Depending on when you tackle this drive, you'll be treated to seemingly endless landscapes of golden fall foliage or fresh, blooming roadside meadows of colorful flowers. Don't forget to stop at the "Hail to the Sunrise" statue which offers unbeatable views of the area.
2. North Street in Westwood to Fisher Street in Walpole
This is a quick drive that only runs about 4 miles round trip. You'll pass right by Adams Farm, which is ringed by over 360 acres of town-owned property that is thick with gorgeous foliage. If you feel like hopping out of your car, you can hike, picnic or simply wander around the farm.
3. Mount Greylock Scenic Byway
This charming country road will take you past scenic sites like Natural Bridge State Park and the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. As you might guess from the name, you'll drive right up to the summit of Mount Greylock and experience the beautiful views from the peak without ever having to pull on your hiking boots.
4. Chickatawbut Road through the Blue Hills
This is a great country drive for those who live near Boston and want to escape into nature for a while. Take Chickatawbut Road from Braintree to Milton through the Blue Hills Reservation and enjoy verdant forest views and a peaceful winding course.
5. Jacob's Ladder Scenic Byway
Travel through the foothills of the Berkshires on this lovely country road. This byway will take you through small towns and sheer cliffs that run with glittering runoff from the mountains above. There are plenty of spots to pull over and admire the view, as well as paths that lead straight from the road into the lush woods that border much of the road.
6. Connecticut River Byway
This beautiful scenic byway actually about 274 miles long. It will take you past a whopping 1,200 nationally recognized historic sites, as well as plenty of lovely old homes and beautiful overlooks. You'll be treated to rural landscapes that include some of the most fertile agricultural land in the region.
7. Essex Coastal Scenic Byway
This country drive in Massachusetts is more "coastal" than "country." You'll be swept along beautiful ocean views and through the Great Marsh, which is the largest salt marsh in New England. Make a pit stop in the town of Essex to check out the Essex Shipbuilding Museum and snap some photos of the town's historic architecture.
