There's way more to the Bay State than Boston and the Cape. Woven throughout the landscape are numerous small towns that are worth exploring. We've done a small roundup of some of the coolest small towns in Massachusetts that maybe you haven't even heard of before. Each town on this list has its own charm and something to offer visitors. 1. Onset
Technically speaking, Onset is part of Wareham and has a population of just over 1,000 residents. So, what does Onset have to offer? Not only is it close to the Cape, but it is its own picturesque beach community located on Buzzards Bay.
2. Erving
Located in Franklin County, the town of Erving has a population of nearly 1,800 residents. One of the biggest attractions here is the French King Bridge which spans across the Connecticut River. From atop the bridge, you'll be able to take in some gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape. And it's extra beautiful here during the fall!
3. Westport
Westport, a town in Bristol County, is home to over 15,000 residents, and one visit here may make you want to live here too. Not only is it home to Horseneck Beach State Reservation but it is also where you will find both a winery and a brewery.
4. Dunstable
Dunstable is a rural community of 3,400 residents by the New Hampshire border. Its remote location and rural feel make it a relaxing town to visit. Take a hike at the Arched Bridge Conservation Area where you can walk over an old stone bridge.

5. Nahant
You can find the small town of Nahant in Essex County. At one square mile, you can find quite a lot of beauty packed into this tiny community. Head to Nahant Beach for some beachcombing and then visit the Henry Cabot Lodge House which is a National Historic Landmark.
6. Hull
Hull is the smallest town in Plymouth County and its unique feature is that it occupies a peninsula that juts out into Boston Harbor. Here you will find Nantasket Beach, the Paragon Carousel and Museum, restaurants, shops, and more. It's a lovely beach town that's worth spending some time exploring.
7. Chester
The town of Chester is home to over 1,300 people in Hampden County. It's a place that is best known for the Keystone Arch Bridges. One of the most unique hikes in Massachusetts will take you to a set of two former railroad bridges that were built in 1841. They are on the list of National Historic Landmarks.
