Austin, Texas, may have a reputation for keepin' it weird, but here in Maryland, we have quite the quirky side, too! For proof of this, you need only visit Baltimore. From a museum famous for its larger-than-life pink poodle to a market that's as bizarre as it sounds, you'll delight in the zaniness that is Baltimore, Maryland. This unique day trip to Baltimore is weird and wonderful, and a must-do.
Baltimore, Maryland, is known as Charm City. Of course, Baltimore has lots of renowned tourist attractions -- but it's also a wonderland of weird.
National Aquarium is located right on Baltimore Harbor, and its colorful facade is the first signal that this place isn't your average aquarium.
The National Aquarium is home to all sorts of unique creatures, like this mosshead warbonnet.
You'll also find two-toed sloths hanging around!
The National Aquarium is home to several of these adorable little creatures, which you'll find in the Rainforest Exhibit. Fun fact: these sloths mate and give birth while hanging upside down!
The most famous furry creature in Baltimore, however, isn't the two-toed sloth.
It's Fifi, the pink poodle.
You'll find Fifi in the American Visionary Art Museum.
This place welcomes the weird, and is one of the most unique attractions in Baltimore.
This museum regularly has exhibits that push the boundaries.
From kinetic sculptures to tiny robots to postmodern paintings, this is unlike any art museum you've been to, and a must on our unique Baltimore road trip. Read more about this unique place at the American Visionary Art Museum website.
Another unique museum? The National Museum of Dentistry.
This place is just as interesting as it sounds, with larger-than-life mouths uncannily hanging open everywhere you look. If you have a fear of dentists, the National Museum of Dentistry could either make you laugh out loud -- or give you nightmares forever.
Rounding out our must-see museums on this day trip is the Chamber of Wonders at the Walters Art Museum.
This Baltimore museum is a treasure trove of odds and ends -- from medieval armor to taxidermy.
But the oddities don't stop there! When in Baltimore, a visit to Bazaar is a must.
Bazaar specializes in unique and bizarre gifts, from preserved insects and animal bones, to antique embalming kits, and unique artwork.
And if you feel so inspired, taxidermy workshops regularly take place at this store.
After all that taxidermy, it's time to take our day trip outdoors.
Well known for being a little odd, Edgar Allen Poe made his life here in Charm City. Baltimore is home to Mr. Poe's final resting place. You'll find his gravestone at 515 W Fayette Street, Baltimore, MD, 21201.
Continuing our cemetery tour, Elijah Bond's grave is also in Baltimore.
Bond's grave stands out from most tombstones because it’s designed like his 1891 invention: the Ouija board. You'll find the curious gravestone at Green Mount Cemetery, 1501 Greenmount Avenue, Baltimore, MD, 21202.
Moving away from the macabre, Charm City Cakes is perhaps the most famous bakery in the city.
They're known for creating cakes that are stunning works of art (and also a really popular Food Network show!).
Inside, you'll find one-of-a-kind creations that are sure to tempt your tastebuds.
Charm City Cakes also sells cakes and merch, and even hosts online classes for those looking to take their cake game to the next level.
After visiting all of these unique sites in Baltimore, it's time to eat, at yet another Charm City iconoclast: Papermoon Diner.
Papermoon Diner is one of the most unique restaurants in Baltimore. They've been making brunch fun in Charm City since 1994.
The inside of this restaurant is just as zany as the outside.
But don't let its peculiar looks deter you; the food here is absolutely delicious -- especially if you're into breakfast. (The "Big Dipper" French toast is the stuff dreams are made of!) However, if disembodied doll heads aren't your thing, you may want to opt to sit in Papermoon's outdoor patio!
