1) A few hours south of Washington DC, Skyline Drive is a 105 mile road that runs the entire length of Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While it’s a bit farther than the other drives on the list, the colors make it worth the drive.
2) Even DC traffic is somewhat bearable when you take the GW Parkway in the fall. Take the GW park way toward Great Falls and get incredible views of the foliage along the Potomac River.

3) Highland County Way will take you from southwest DC to Highland County VA and is perfect for a weekend getaway. You’ll pass through Shenandoah National Park where you’ll see the mountain views and end up in Highland County, which is known as “Virginia’s Switzerland.”
4) Take the Baltimore Washington Parkway north towards Baltimore and while you’ll see some metropolitan areas, you’ll also experience the gorgeous hills and beautiful country views on the way.
5) Take a trip up to Charles Town to check out the races and enjoy the charming town. If you take US-340W to WV-51, you’ll cross over the Shenandoah and through the hills of West Virginia.
6) Route 50 West is one of the prettiest stretches of road near Washington DC, especially if you take all the way out past Fairfax County and toward Middleburg.
