Many people have many ideas about DC. But us Washingtonians, we know that most people don't understand the district like we do. And we tolerate their misconceptions. However, if you come to DC, you should know these are the 10 things you should never ever say to a Washingtonian.
1. "Do you know someone who works in the White House?"
No, we don't. Well, maybe some of us do but for the most part, we have the same distance to political power as everyone else.
2. "DC is a swamp."
No matter how you mean this phrase, just think about how rude it might sound to those who call DC home.
3. "Is there a place I can park?"
There is not. And if there is, it is probably expensive and it will take forever to find a spot. Please do us a favor and don't drive into the district. We have great public transportation.
4. "I don’t really like brunch."
Who doesn't like brunch? No, really, we refuse to accept that there are people who don't like brunch. Perhaps you just haven't found the right brunch spot.
5. "Why are people in DC so rude?"
Washingtonians gets a bad rap for not being nice. When in reality, we are. Just because we don't wave or smile to everyone does not make us rude. If you ask us a question or need help, we'll be there for you.
6. "Everyone in DC is out of touch."
This one is really far from the truth. In fact, DC is one of the most diverse populations in the country and because of our close proximity to the government (and lack of representation), we're quite in touch with the realities.
7. "Is there anything else to do other than monuments and memorials?
DC is brimming with activities -- hiking, bars, restaurants, art galleries, shopping and so much more! In truth, the monuments and memorials are only one small part of DC.
8. "I’m a Pens fan."
The Washington Capitals are the only hockey team we will cheer for and accept in DC.
9. "They’re expecting 3-6 inches of snow tomorrow."
Expect to hear groans, panic and musings over when schools and offices will close.
10. "Wow, how expensive is that?"
DC is one of the most expensive markets in the country. We already know this because we pay taxes and bills here. So we don't need reminders!
