DC is known for some fantastic festivals, including the recent Cherry Blossom Festival. But if you dare to venture outside the city to the charming small towns in Maryland and Virginia, you will find even more unique and fun festivals. Here are the 13 best small town festivals near DC you should check out this year.
1. Peach Festival
In one of America’s coolest small towns, the Peach Festival is a community celebration featuring pie baking and pie eating contest, live music and more! This year’s festival is on Saturday, August 5th in Berlin, MD.
2. King Street Art Festival
This year is the 15th Annual King Street Art Festival in Alexandria, VA. The historic Main Street becomes a world-class outdoor gallery. View six blocks of artwork by over 200 local artists on September 16-17th.
3. Mid-Maryland Celtic Festival
Mid-Maryland Celtic Festival is a one day festival celebrating all things Scottish including Celtic rock and traditional music, Scottish dancing and Highland games. This year’s festival is on May 13th.
4. Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival
This gorgeous festival is celebrating it’s 27th year. You can find everything from exotic flowers to organic vegetables, tasty food, charming gifts and incredible art. This year’s festival is April 22nd and 23rd.
5. Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival
Winchester’s most popular festival is two weeks of fun. They have numerous events including the Old Town Blooming Wine Festival, Apple Blossom Carnival, parades, parties and more!
6. National Apple Harvest Festival
Just a two hour drive from DC, the National Apple Harbor Festival is a fantastic fall fest. Head to Pennsylvania Apple country during the first tow weeks of October and enjoy crafts, live music, amazing food, orchard tours and live demonstrations.
7. The Great Pumpkin Carve
A Halloween themed festival where over 60 local carvers come to carve unique creations in their pumpkins. This three day festival includes amazing decorated pumpkins, a haunted trail for little ones, live music and other fall fun activities! This year’s festival will take place October 19-21.
8. The Flying Circus Hot Air Balloon Festival
The sky brightens up as hundreds of hot air balloons take to the sky at the Flying Circuls Hot Air Balloon Festival in Bealton, VA. Balloon rides are availabe in the early morning and late afternoon. During mid-day, the world famous Flying Circus Airshow takes place. This year’s festival will take place on August 19-20.
9. Chestertown Tea Party Festival
Go back to 1774 on the Eastern Shore. The annual tea party reenacts the historic moment when the colonists threw British tea overboard in an act of resistance. The festival also includes a colonial parade, street performances and much more! The festival takes place on Memorial Day weekend every year.
10. Maryland Faerie Festival
This whimsical festival is perfect for fairy tale lovers! Experience magic and mischief with fairy themed games, crafts, and food. Costumes are encouraged! This year’s event will take place June 9-11 in Darlington MD.
11. Renaissance Festival
Go back in time to a 16th-century English village at the Renaissance Festival in Annapolis. Spread out over 25 acres, costumed actors will entertain you with themed performances including live music plays and jousting tournaments.
12. Heart of Virginia Festival
Called "The best small town festival in the world," the Heart of Virginia Festival celebrates arts, crafts, culture and music in the heart of Virginia in Farmville, VA. It takes places the first Saturday in May every year.
13. Autumn Glory Festival
Garrett County Maryland’s annual festival is a fantastic celebration of all things fall. You will see beautiful fall foliage, enjoy local band competitions, art exhibits, craft shows and two incredible parades. The festival is set for October 11-October 15 in Oakland, Maryland.
