Each year we look forward to the arrival of summer in Maine. You can tell it's almost here when the evening breeze becomes just a bit less chilly. The sun sets later and we all feel a little more laid back. But when summer actually arrives it can feel like a mad dash to cram in our favorite warm-weather activities before the kids go back to school and a sweater is necessary. To make the most of this summer, hop in the car and head out on this road trip. It takes in some of our favorite spots and offers an opportunity to maximize the absolutely glorious weather that can only be experienced during a summer in Maine! 1. The Maine Diner, Wells

This local spot has been a favorite for more than 30 years and it's the first stop on your road trip. Plan to get here as early as you can because all that popularity and national press means they're busy. Load up on coffee and enjoy their local specials. You'll need the fuel for the rest of your adventure! You can learn more about them by visiting their website.

2. The Wells Reserve at Laudholm, Wells

Your first real summer stop is one that will take you outside to enjoy some Maine nature. This historic spot has a farmhouse that's on the National Register of Historic Places and tons of trails. We recommend the Laird-Norton Trail and the Barrier Beach Trail which include a fun boardwalk leading to the beach. Learn more about it here.

3. Raptor Falls Mini Golf & Ice Cream, Arundel

Now that you've taken in the local nature it's time to experience some man-made goodness. This is one of our favorite mini golf courses. The dinosaur theme is lots of fun and the fact that the dinos move makes it super-unique. Play a round and then grab some ice cream for optimal enjoyment! 4. Old Orchard Beach

There's so much to do at OOB that you could make an entire weekend out of just visiting here! But you'll need to pick your priorities to fit it all in. Your last stop of the day is next, so if you'd like to take some extra time here you can. Choose to spend some time relaxing on the beach or head right to the pier for pier fries. Either way, this is a must-see for Mainers in the summer.

5. Eastern Promenade & Fort Allen Park, Portland

Next, you're heading north to Portland. There's plenty to see here, but this trip has you focused on the Eastern Promenade and Munjoy Hill. Make your way to the top and take in the sweeping view of Casco Bay. Sit in the grass and relax if it's the end of the day. While the sunset will be behind you, the colors are still likely to be beautiful. 6. Best Bower, Portland

There are quite a few places to spend the night in Portland, but we're loving this brand new guesthouse on Munjoy Hill. They've got six rooms, all with their own personality and flair. You'll need to book in advance to make sure you get a spot, but if you do we think you'll love it. You can learn more about them and reserve your room here.

7. Hilltop Coffee, Portland

Wake up bright and early and head just a few steps to Hilltop Coffee. You can get a beverage, breakfast sandwich and enjoy it at one of the sidewalk tables. Or, head back up to the Eastern Prom for another look out over the stunning Casco Bay.

8. Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, Freeport

This 244-acre state park is one of the prettiest in this region of the state. With trails that follow the craggy coast and some that stay further inland, there's plenty to see here. And, throughout the year you can attend a number of events. Be sure to check out this article which will lead you to more information about visiting and how to check their calendar. Plan on spending about two hours here. It's worth it!

9. Coastal Maine Botanical Garden, Boothbay Harbor

Next up is yet more Maine beauty. This fabulous spot offers tours, events and beauty throughout the spring and summer. In 2021 there's even a fun new art installation to see. This stop is one that you'll want to enjoy, so plan on grabbing some food before arriving. Keep track of what's happening by following them on Facebook.

10. Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Bristol

You knew we wouldn't send you on a summer road trip without a lighthouse and this is one we love. The midcoast is beautiful and this light is often missed by those who stick to southern Maine. Now that you're here, enjoy it!
