When you spend the year in Maine, summer is always a welcome relief. Winter can be fun but, after a while, the cold temperatures can start to get to a person. That's why any sign of warmer weather and beach days on the horizon makes our hearts flutter. Once we have strung together a few warm days, and it's clear that spring is here, everything begins feeling a little bit brighter. There's nothing like nature in Maine, and once the flowers, trees, birds, and other wildlife start coming out, there's nothing more wonderful than going out and exploring it.
One more sign that summer is here is when we drive through the state and see lupines along the road. These flowers are easy to find, but they are magnificent when they appear in large quantities. This road trip, inspired by Inns Along the Coast, will take you to a few spots to see lupine fields in Maine that we think you'll love!

1. Captain Jefferds Inn, Kennebunkport
Your trip begins in Kennebunkport near one of the most beautiful small inns in southern Maine — the Captain Jefferds Inn, which has been around since 1804. Today, you'll find a lupine garden right on the property if you visit during the right time of year. If you're wondering "when do lupines blow in Maine?" it is typically in June, though depending on the weather, you'll find them a bit earlier or later.
2. Brewster House Bed & Breakfast, Freeport
Next, it's on to Freeport where, in addition to great shopping, you'll find another beautiful bed and breakfast. This one, right outside of town, is near a plethora of lupines growing in South Freeport along Route One.
3. Newcastle Inn, Newcastle
Continue on Route One and you'll find a place to turn towards Newcastle, home to the Newcastle Inn. As you head towards the inn, there should be plenty of lupines along the way and just off of the road. In fact, this is common in places where the flowers grow. You don't have to search hard to find them as you go about your daily activity.
4. Moose Crossing Garden Center, Waldoboro
Next up is a great place to visit when you want to curate your own garden. It's been around since 1973, so you can trust them if you're looking for something to bring home. If you're on the hunt for lupines, you'll find them just outside. Stop in or keep driving, but either way, this is a fabulous part of Maine.
5. Berry Manor Inn, Rockland
Next, we're visiting Rockland and two of the most well-known inns found there. You'll find lupine gardens growing at each property and on the drive between them. Keep an eye out because these flowers are wild and you're bound to find them all over during Maine lupine season.
6. LimeRock Inn, Rockland
Don't forget to drop by the second Rockland inn to see even more lupines! These beauties absolutely pop on the route through town so make sure you're looking along both sides of the road.
