So, you're finally packing it in and heading north to live life in Vacationland? You've made the right choice! There will be some beautiful days of sailing, hiking, swimming and fishing ahead of you. But, remember that it's not always easy. If you've lived here all your life, you probably know most of these things, but for the newbies out there, here are 13 things you better have in order to survive in Maine.
1. Trail mix.
With all of our state and national parks, trails, mountains and otherwise explorable land, you better have some refueling snacks on hand to keep you going.
2. A State Park pass.
At only $35 per person or $70 per vehicle, this yearly pass grants you access to every state park in the Maine. You might as well, now that you've got all that trail mix! Get more information

3. Bug repellant.
If you'll be spending time in Maine during the summer, you better be prepared with something to keep bugs away or plan on spending lots of time indoors. If you complain, we might have to make fun of you.
4. Thick skin.
If you're going to live in Maine, you'll need to be prepared for us to treat you like family. That means you may get teased, prodded and poked just like we're related. But, we assure you, it comes with the best of intentions!
5. A good snow shovel...
...and hopefully some strong friends. With a Maine winter you're going to need to get used to making snow removal a high priority. Or, make sure you've got a lot of indoor activities to keep you busy.
6. Reliable transportation.
Assuming you've got your snow removal equipment handled, you'll need a good car to get around once you've been able to navigate out of your driveway. This is Maine, so using the snowy roads excuse won't get you out of work.
7. Warm clothes.
Assuming you dug yourself out of the snow, and then got your car out, you'll need to be prepared for whatever lies outside. Make sure you've got enough warm stuff to take you through to spring.
8. A bathing suit.
Because we promise that the snow will melt and you'll want to get out there to explore our lakes, rivers, streams and oceans!
9. A taste for local brews.
In Portland alone, there are 17 breweries making some of our favorite beers in the state. With numbers like that, it's best that you get used to Maine's local beer.
10. A seat belt.
Because when the folks from away come (and they will!) you want to be prepared for their driving.
11. A helmet.
Whether you're into biking, kayaking, skiiing or just good old fashioned hard work, Maine is a risk-takers paradise. Make sure you've got the appropriate gear!
12. An appreciation for seafood.
Because we do it really, really, really well.

13. More specifically, lobstah.
Because in a place where you can buy a lobster fresh from a boat in the harbor, you're going to want to make sure you can participate.
Okay, natives - what did we leave off the list?
