Swan Island was previously known as the town of Perkins.
Perkins was once a thriving community of shipbuilders and ice harvesters. However, the ravages of the Great Depression and World War II drew people away from the quiet island town.

By the 1940s, the town was completely abandoned.
The island is now protected as a state park, and is known for its beautiful wildlife. However, so much of the old town remains.
The abandoned community is filled with reminders of its former life. There’s a cemetery, schoolhouse and even original furniture.

The town is also rumored to be the site of Marie Antoinette’s escape house before her execution during the French Revolution. Local ship captain, Stephen Clough, made his way to France to rescue his daughter who, coincidently, was in the same prison. Clough’s wife even prepared their home for the queen. Legend says she nearly escaped but refused to leave without her son. The house can be seen across the river at Castle Tucker.

Built in 1807, Castle Tucker is one of the oldest in Maine.
It now operates as a museum allowing visitors to see how the last Victorian residents would have lived their daily lives.
And, just across from Castle Tucker is said to be the location of Marie Antoinette’s escape house prior to her execution in France.
