It's fall and those cozy vibes are in the air. That means cozy shirts, fall foliage and preparations for the weather to get pretty chilly soon. Despite the fact that cold weather will be here in the next few months, we're excited about this season mostly for one great reason. Orchards across the state are offering lots of picking experiences, apple cider, and delicious donuts. Here are some of our favorites.
1. Five Fields Farm, Bridgton
If you're not sure what kind of apples you like best, this is the place for you. They have so many varieties, you'll be able to get a good taste of everything. You can pick your own or just pop into the farmstand to bring them home. And they have lots of tasty baked goods, too. In the winter check out their cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Address: 720 S Bridgton Road, Bridgton, ME 04009.
2. Wallingford's Fruit House, Auburn
The sweeping views at Wallingford are worth the trip even if you don't love apples. But we're willing to bet you'll have a great time here along with loving the views. There are wagon rides, fresh produce, and absolutely drool-worth pies and dumplings. Address: 1240 Perkins Ridge Road, Auburn, ME 04210.
3. Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards, Cumberland
History lovers will want to make this their first stop on the fall tour of apple orchards in Maine. The family farm has been running since 1812. Yes, that's more than 200 years and running! Today they support nearly 1,000 apple trees. Address: 19 Blanchard Road, Cumberland, ME 04021.
4. Pietree Orchard, Sweden
This western Maine farm has everything you need if you love homegrown everything. Head in for apple picking, but make plans to visit at other times for year for their peaches, strawberries, blueberries, and fresh vegetables. Love donuts? They've got some of the best! Address: 803 Waterford Road, Sweden, ME 04040
5. Maine-ly Apples Orchard, Dixmont
Could a farm with "Maine" in the name be any more Maine?! In addition to apples galore, this place offers great ice cream and donuts. Once you've loaded up, take a walk on their one-mile nature trail to feel a little less full. Address: 346 Moosehead Trail Highway, Dixmont, ME 04932.
6. Thompson's Orchard, New Gloucester
Sine 1906, this family farm has been giving people an opportunity to taste some seriously delicious cider and donuts. They're showing no signs of slowing and some say it all gets better every year. Address: 276 Gloucester Hill Road, New Gloucester, ME 04260.
7. Boothby's Orchard and Farm Winery, Livermore
What could be better than an orchard that's also a winery? Nothing! And that's what we love about this place. They offer wine tastings in addition to picking opportunities. They also carry their own mums, pumpkins, corn stalks, and hay bales for fall decorating. Address: 366 Boothby Road, Livermore, ME 04253.
8. Greenwood Orchards, Turner
This little spot might not be on the tourist path, but it's a wonderful spot for locals to visit for all the fall goods they could want. And their donuts? Some of the best in the state! Address: 174 Auburn Road, Turner, ME 04282.
9. Rocky Ridge Orchard, Bowdoin
This little spot doesn't stay open beyond Halloween so you'll want to get there soon. Like the others they offer an opportunity to pick your own apples, plus you can grab some in the farmstand. While you're there be sure to stock up on their baked goods, too.
Address: 38 Rocky Ridge Lane, Bowdoin, ME 04287.
