While we might have a slight bias, we're willing to go on record and say that Maine is the best place you can spend time. Whether it's vacations at camp or by the sea, or a year-round life here, we're willing to bet there's no place else you'd rather be. But, if you're not a regular visitor you might need some advice on where to visit. Or, maybe you're a resident and want to get out of your routine. Either way, start with these towns! They were recently named the best to visit in Maine by Down East Magazine and we'd love to hear if you agree.

1. Augusta

Maine's capital might not be top of mind when you consider places to visit here, but little-by-little it's made a name for itself as a destination. Quite a few bars and restaurants have opened in the last three years and we anticipate lots more on the horizon.

2. Rangeley

Long considered one of the best vacation destinations in the state, Rangeley is wonderful year-round. Things changed here back in 2015 when Saddleback closed, but it looks like it might be opening again as early as the 2020-2021 ski season!

3. Hope

This rural, little midcoast spot is big on character but low on city vibes. This place is definitely for folks who prefer the quiet life. But the good news is that there's plenty of nature to keep you busy, making this a great place for outdoor lovers.

4. Ellsworth

Ellsworth is a great place to base yourself if you love Acadia. Just 15 miles from the park, it offers easy access while also filled with enough shops and restaurants to keep you busy between visits.

5. Brunswick

The college town located just north of Portland is so much more than just that. It's got its fair share of bars and restaurants, plus a hearty helping of coffee shops. Just what you'd expect in a college town, but so much more.

6. Westbrook

As Portland housing costs have risen, Westbrook has become a go-to spot for those looking for a way to stay in the area. But more than just a more affordable way of life, the town offers plenty to do and see.

7. Hampden

This rural town is considered Maine’s second-safest, but that's just one reason to make the move here. They also have a stellar school district. And, if you're craving some action just head to Bangor, which is just down the road.

8. Brooksville

The tiny population of this little town lives in a rural setting with some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. There's a reason why Robert McCloskey set his classic children's book One Morning in Maine here. Need more motivation? This place has some of the lowest property taxes in the state.

9. Biddeford

This southern town has come into its own over the last few years. Old mills have been converted offering living and working space. Plus, there are plenty of places to enjoy a night out.

10. Eastport

The easternmost town in Maine is also one of the most lovely in the state. You might be slightly off-the-beaten-path, but you'll also have access to low home prices and tons of beauty.

11. South Berwick

Despite having the beauty of rural Maine, this little town is just an hour from both Portland and Boston. What's even more special is that their entire downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places.

12. North Haven

If you're all about community you're going to love North Haven. This island-bound town is about an hour on the ferry from Rockland. While dining choices might be limited during the winter, things here are absolutely hopping in the summer.
