By most standards, Slidell, Louisiana is not considered a small town. With a population that hovers around 30,000, Slidell is one of those little-big cities that is really the best of both worlds. If you really want to enjoy the sights and sounds of Camellia City, then make your way over Olde Towne Slidell where things still move at a slower pace and it gives off that small-town charm that we love so much. Here's more on the must-visit destination of Slidell, Louisiana:
Olde Towne Slidell is one of those hidden gems that just transports you back in time.
As one of the oldest parts of Slidell, this old-school downtown area is chock-full of local businesses, restaurants, antique shops, and more.
Your first stop should be the Slidell Museum.
Here, you can learn all about how the town flourished after the railroad came to town, the history of the town, and so much more. The Slidell Mardi Gras Museum is also within the same building, so be sure to save enough time so you can check out both.
As you wander through the area, you're bound to work up an appetite.
KY’s Olde Towne Bicycle Shop Restaurant is one of my favorites. The century-old building has seen many businesses come and go over the years, including a bicycle shop. The restaurant pays homage to the building's history just about everywhere you look, including the ceiling which has several antique bicycles hanging from it.
On the northern edge of Olde Town, Heritage Park is a beautiful public park along the waterfront with plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy.
Fishing and biking are popular, but there's also a playground for the young ones as well as plenty of benches and picnic tables scattered around to sit for a spell and take in the view.
An adventurous day like this one deserves to end on a sweet note, and you can't go wrong with anything from Olde Town Soda Shop.
The nostalgic soda shop is as old-fashioned as it gets. Sundaes, banana splits, milkshakes and more all served in antique glassware that you just don't see anymore. This soda shop also has some savory bites, too, so if you're craving chili cheese fries, they've got you covered.
For a picture-perfect end to the day, enjoy your ice cream at Heritage Park and take in the beautiful sunset.
Mother Nature has been known to put on quite the show from here!
While you're in Slidell, consider taking a tour of the Honey Island Swamp, one of the most pristine river swamps in the country! Don't forget to pack some snacks for the road.
