Small towns are the best. Sure, the hustle and bustle of bigger cities is certainly alluring, but there's just something special about spending time in small towns, right? Perhaps it's the slower pace, or maybe it's the friendly faces and businesses where everyone knows your name. These five small towns in Louisiana have some of the most charming downtown scenes, and they're worth a visit from any corner of the state!
1. Denham Springs
Denham Springs is a city just outside of Baton Rouge with a population that hovers around 9,000 people. The city’s Antique Village in the downtown area is just one of the many reasons to spend an afternoon exploring Denham Springs, as well as the many lovely restaurants nearby.
2. Breaux Bridge
The heart of Cajun Country and the Crawfish Capital of the World, Breaux Bridge is a charming town that’s overflowing with incredible restaurants and shopping opportunities.
3. Covington
Covington is a larger city with a population of around 12,000, but the historic downtown area makes Covington feel like a small town. Dozens of antique shops pepper the streets, as well as unique boutiques, bakeries, coffee shops, and more.
4. St. Francisville
With a population of fewer than 2,000 residents, St. Francisville is the quintessential small town. Dotted with ancient oaks and rolling hills, this sleepy little town is as charming as it is beautiful. The downtown historic district is filled with several historic buildings including churches, homes, and restaurants. Of course, St. Francisville is most well known for being the home of one of the country’s most haunted plantations, The Myrtles.
5. Donaldsonville
Just outside of Baton Rouge lies Donaldsonville, a popular place for families to move to when they want to experience small-town life but still be a stone’s throw away from a big city like Baton Rouge. The downtown scene is dotted with historic museums and tasty restaurants to fill up on.
