Louisiana is a river state---no doubt about it. The large majority of our towns and cities are found on bodies of water. We found 11 of those towns where waterways play a big role in the character of the city. From small towns to larger cities, there's something for everyone in these beautiful places.
1. Pearl River
Pearl River was originally known as Halloo, reportedly because loggers yelled that term to one another as they labored along the river. Today, the town is a sleepy one surrounded by beautiful nature.
2. Jonesville
The largest town in Catahoula Parish, Jonesville is found at the place where the Ouachita, Tensas, and Little Rivers intersect. These three rivers become the Black River at Jonesville.
3. Abbeville
The parish seat of Vermilion Parish, Abbeville is a beautiful small city with lots of historic architecture. It's also home to a number of local festivals, including the Daylily Festival, the Garden Show and the Giant Omelette Celebration.
4. Donaldsonville
Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River down River Road in Ascension parish, Donaldsonville is an amazing historic town with beautiful architecture.
5. Bastrop
The largest city and parish seat of Morehouse Parish, Bastrop was formally incorporated in 1857. The town served as a relief camp for refugees during the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. It sits near the banks of Bayou Bartholomew.
6. Breaux Bridge
This cajun town outside of Lafayette has so much to offer visitors and locals alike. Don't miss the crawfish here! Breaux Bridge sits on the banks of Bayou Teche.
7. Alexandria
Another of the largest cities in Louisiana, Alexandria is found in the heart of Louisiana and sits on the banks of the Red River.
8. Morgan City
Morgan City sits on the banks of the Atchafalaya River. This town was originally called "Tiger Island" because a specific kind of wild cat that was found in the area.
9. Monroe
One of the largest cities in Louisiana, Monroe sits on the Ouachita River and is filled with incredible cultural opportunities.
10. Opelousas
Louisiana's third oldest city, Opelousas was a trading post between New Orleans and Natchitoches. Louisiana heritage is commemorated here and the town is also known as the spice capital of the world and is surrounded by bayous.
11. Natchitoches
This historic town is found near the banks of the Red River and is also home to Cane River Lake, which serves as the backdrop to the gorgeous downtown here.
