A visit to a historic site in Kentucky is a great way to spend an afternoon and when you can combine it with a sweet treat, that's even better! Many locals have made a Sunday drive (or two) to locate some of the state's historic covered bridges and one that should be on your list is the Walcott Covered Bridge in Bracken County. Located at 1159 and the AA Highway, the Walcott Covered Bridge in Kentucky is worth a visit on its own, but you'll definitely want to consider a stop at the adjacent Walcott Whippi Dip. This charming little ice cream shop and snack stand is open during the summer and makes for the perfect little road trip in Kentucky.
Nestled in the hills of Bracken County along the AA Highway is the historic Walcott Covered Bridge.
Painted white, it's difficult to miss this bridge and it is actually a very accessible historic site in Kentucky. You can pull off the highway and park in a lot near the bridge.
The bridge was originally built in 1824 and it is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
After much use and heavy flood damage, the bridge was rebuilt in 2002 and is only open to foot traffic today.
The bridge crosses Locust Creek, a spot some locals use as a little swimming hole in the heat of summer.
If you are within an hour or two of this spot, it's worth a scenic road trip to take the back roads and make a stop at this historic bridge.
The inside of the bridge shows off the old construction style and feels very original and authentic.
Unfortunately, there has been some vandalism here over the years, so of course do not contribute to this and be sure to treat the site with the utmost respect.
After exploring the bridge for a bit, once you cross it, you'll happen upon a sweet surprise that's ideal for a summer afternoon.
The Walcott Whippi Dip is a family-owned ice cream and snack shop that's been open for a few years now. It's only open during the summer and this year it plans on opening May 29th.
You'll want to follow along with the Whippi Dip on Facebook, linked below, to double check hours and what they're currently offering.
Especially if you've taken a longer road trip to reach the bridge, you'll be happy to find enough snacks here to make a meal, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and pulled pork.
But it's the ice cream that has us grabbing our car keys and planning a visit.
We will gladly enjoy a big ice cream cone for lunch when it means we can sit on the edge of the creek with a historic covered bridge as our back drop.
This charming area of Kentucky takes you back to the good old days and makes for a simple, yet satisfying little outing.
