Many historic towns in Kentucky were originally formed for a very specific reason. In Oldham County, the small city of Pewee Valley was a stop along a bustling railroad, and the tracks are still in use today. This timeless town is so small that if you blink, you may miss it, but you won't want to for its interesting history and natural beauty.
The small town of Pewee Valley is located off of I-71, northeast of Louisville.
The town was first settled in 1852, thanks to a stop on the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad.
This quaint little town was first named Smith's Station.
A short four years later in 1856, the name was changed to Pewee Valley after the bird, the Eastern Wood Pewee. Today, the town is still nestled next to the train tracks, which remain in operation.
With a population of just over 1,500 and a total area of 1.9 square miles, you really have to make sure you're paying attention when you drive through the city limits.
While it is small, there's quite a bit going on for such a tiny town. First of all, it's a naturally beautiful area with Kentucky's infamous tree-lined streets and small town charm.
There are a few notable places within Pewee Valley for both locals and visitors, alike.
Jucy's Smokehouse is the place to go for mouthwatering barbecue and a unique atmosphere. You'll enjoy the rustic setting and delicious menu.
Pewee Valley was once home to the Kentucky Confederate Home and now has the only cemetery for Confederate Veterans in the country.
313 Confederate Veterans are buried in this cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Little Colonel Players have been entertaining audiences in the area since 1957.
The theater holds 5 stage productions per year and is Oldham County's only regional theater.
Pewee Valley's Central Park is also a lovely place to relax and enjoy this timeless Kentucky town.
If you're driving along I-71 and would like to experience a town that seems to have frozen in time, check out Pewee Valley. Just don't blink as you get close, or you may just miss this interesting train town in the Bluegrass State.
