The Bluegrass State is blessed with good hearted people, for the most part. It is true many Kentuckians work hard, and play hard, but the bottom line is, we still take time out to think about others. We rank amongst the top 25 most giving states according Metropolitan Statistical data acquired in a 2012 report by Philanthropy.com. Their findings showed Kentuckians give 3.46% of their adjusted gross income to charity. The adjusted gross income is a combined $54,056,478,000, and the total charitable contributions were $1,941,099,000. That doesn’t look to bad in comparison to the states that ranked below us, but what generous cities in Kentucky helped us achieve that rank?
Here are the 10 most generous cities in Kentucky, according to data provided:
10. Covington
This beautiful community had a giving ratio of 2.69% with total contributions of $1,160,076,000. The total adjusted gross income was $43,138,571,000.
9. Ashland
The beautiful town of Ashland isn’t known for its riches, but it had a giving ratio of 3.25% with total contributions of $84,306,000. The total adjusted gross income was $2,596,543,000.
8. Portsmouth
This little known part of the metro area had a giving ratio of 3.25% with total contributions of $84,306,000. The total adjusted gross income was $2,596,543,000.
7. Louisville
Despite being Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville only had a giving ratio of 3.37% with total contributions of $768,372,000,. The total adjusted gross income was $22,806,331,000.
6. Henderson
This scenic part of the Bluegrass State had a giving ratio of 3.39% with total contributions of $160,492,000 . The total adjusted gross income was $4,740,086,000.
5. Bowling Green
This friendly city in the middle of our state had a giving ratio of 3.64% with total contributions of $57,331,000. The total adjusted gross income was $1,576,648,000.
4. Lexington
The home of the Kentucky Wildcats had a giving ratio of 3.66% with total contributions of $316,760,000. The total adjusted gross income was $8,659,727,000.
3. Owensboro
The third largest city in our state appropriately, had the 3rd largest giving ratio at 3.72 % with total contributions of $52,254,000. The total adjusted gross income was $1,405,782,000.
2. Elizabethtown
This beautiful part of our state had a giving ration of 4.04% with total contributions of $52,708,000. The total adjusted gross income was $1,303,613,000.
1. Hopkinsville
The charitable people of Hopkinsville have the highest giving ratio in the state at 4.47% with total contributions of $91,697,000. The total adjusted gross income was $2,049,242,000.
Since the list is based on metropolitan statistics, we used the biggest or primary communities for the most generous cities in Kentucky. However, if your city falls within the metropolitan area according to the data, it is part of the study. For example, Lexington’s data includes Wilmore, Paris, Versailles, Mount Vernon and Midway.
