Here in the Bluegrass State, there are many towns that are unique and fascinating. Whether they are large, small, or in between, these towns help tell the story of Kentucky's history. However, if there is only one town in the state that looks like something out of a fairy tale, it would definitely be this old river town in northern Kentucky.
Augusta is located in Bracken County, right on the Ohio River. It's only about 43 miles away from Cincinnati, but as you stroll along the peaceful banks of this little town, it's hard to imagine that a huge metropolis is only about an hour downstream.
According to Census information, Augusta has a population of about 1,190. Many well-known people have lived in Augusta, including famous actor George Clooney, who attended Augusta High School. George's famous aunt, Rosemary Clooney, and his father, Nick Clooney, are also from Augusta. Another notable person who was born here is Heather French Henry, who was crowned Miss America in 2000.
In downtown Augusta, you'll find this C&O caboose, which serves as the town's Welcome Center.
This old river town was founded by Philip Buckner in 1786, so it is brimming with history. Originally it served as a trading post along the Ohio River.
This old log cabin was moved to Augusta from Mason County in the 1970s, but it is now being used as an antique shop called Touch of Past.
This picturesque log cabin, which dates back to the 1700s, is the perfect place to sell antiques and collectibles, and is located in Augusta's historic downtown.
Augusta is right across the Ohio River from Brown County in Ohio. You can get a beautiful view of this quaint town from the other side.
A stroll along East Riverside Drive in Augusta, especially on a warm summer day, is one of the most peaceful activities you could do in this town.
You can even take a ferry across the river, which is especially magical in the mornings when there is still a layer of fog rising off of the river.
