We have all sorts of trails here in Kentucky and while you hopefully enjoy the countless hiking trails throughout the state, don't forget to also check out those trails that focus on the best local eateries in the Bluegrass. Of course we all know about the Bourbon Trail and we've even created an Ice Cream Trail in Kentucky, but today we are going to talk about another sweet treat. Who doesn't love donuts? Whether you spell it donut or doughnut, these breakfast favorites are delicious any time of day. And speaking of an entire day, check out our new Donut Trail that takes you to some of the best donuts in Kentucky.
1. R&S Salvage Grocery
We begin our trip in Horse Cave, but you can visit these shops in whatever order works best for you. Do keep in mind that some of these places sell out at some point during the day, so you'll want to get an early start. R&S is an Amish bakery and grocery store that has a wide variety of mouthwatering donuts. They also have fried pies and soft pretzels, so if you miss out on the donuts, there are plenty of treats from which to choose. Learn more about this local bakery and grocery store in our previous article.
2. Magee's Bakery
Editor's Note: Unfortunately, this bakery is permanently closed.
Next we head to Lexington with a stop at Magee's. This local favorite is family-owned and known for their made-from-scratch creations. Just look at the thick icing on that donut! They also have other baked goods and hot breakfast sandwiches if you're in the mood for something savory. Before visiting, be sure to take a closer look at Magee's Bakery.
3. Best Donut
Between Lexington and Louisville, make a stop at Best Donut in Campbellsville. If you're going to name your bakery "Best" you better deliver and this local spot definitely does. They have many options when it comes to donuts and also have savory choices, but we recommend going with a box of donut holes for something different. See why Best Donut is one of the best in Kentucky in our previous article.
4. Nord's Bakery
We originally found out about Nord's Bakery in Louisville from a reader and we are so glad we did! This local favorite is popular for good reason with a great blend of both classic and innovative donuts. Stop here for a donut and a cup of freshly brewed coffee. See why Nord's is a Louisville favorite in our previous article.
5. Moonrise Doughnuts
Our last stop is in Northern Kentucky and it's the perfect way to finish up your Donut Trail day trip. Moonrise Doughnuts is known for serving its tasty treats late into the evening and you absolutely must order the fresh, hot donut of the night. After a day of tasting sweet donuts, you'll probably be up all night any way! Plan a visit at this NKY hot spot with our previous article.
If you have a sweet tooth and want to try some of the best donuts in Kentucky, take a delicious day trip along our Donut Trail. Did your favorite local bakery in Kentucky make the list? What is your go-to spot for the best donuts in Kentucky? Let us know in the comments!
And there are two more favorite donut shops in Kentucky that deserve a mention. Both of these bakeries are in Paducah, so they would've extended our day trip a bit too much. But we highly recommend you also try Red's Donut Shop and Munal's.
