Back in the wild west, horses and wagons rode the streets, and gunslingers were a reality. However, did you know you can still see how those days were lived right here in Kansas? The preserved remnants of this early Kansas cowtown are now a museum that you can't go a summer without seeing. Let's check it out!
While the old west was decades ago, you'll still find the spirit alive and well here in Dodge City at Boot Hill.
These buildings make up a small town that's all part of the museum experience. And oh boy, it is an experience.
Back in the day, the center area would be dirt road, constantly kicked up by horses and cattle alike, from settlers traveling through the area and making their daily rounds.
The Santa Fe Trail is responsible for much of that traffic, as Dodge City was an important stop after Kansas City.
Ever since 1947, this museum has dedicated itself to keeping the history of the culture and artifacts alive.
Today, the collection has expanded to include old buildings, plenty of well-used items from that time period, and good people to play the characters of those long gone.
A big draw for tourists is the reenactment shows Boot Hill puts on, with gunpowder and plenty of drama.
There's nothing better than a country style dinner served in a saloon before an exciting reenacted gunfight.
The Variety Show is another big pull, as it's been running strong for 55 years, with dancers of all ages and walks of live becoming part of history in their own way.
Miss Kitty here is the star of the show, and it wouldn't be the same without her, honestly. She's built this amazing show with her hard work, and a visit to Boot Hill isn't complete without it. The next time you come through these parts, make sure you come see her at the Long Branch Saloon!
To think that this was once a real bar and not a museum is crazy.
However, the preservation of the jail, schoolhouse, blacksmith's shop, and many other buildings make Boot Hill and Dodge City what they are today.
Stop in for a day full of wild western fun, and leave with a souvenir or two and a day full of memories.
Boot Hill is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the week.
You'll find your slice of the wild west at Boot Hill located at 500 W Wyatt Earp Blvd., Dodge City, KS. Save me a sarsaparilla!
While you're in Dodge City, you should check out this amazing water park with a boomerang slide and a long lazy river to relax in.
