There's a lot of people in Kansas that we'd classify as odd. Even more of them are just plan weird. However, we've got a few small towns that are just filled with unique Kansans that make that town one of the strangest we've seen. However, we think this small town in Kansas takes the title for "Strangest Town in the Midwest" by a mile. Of course we don't mean it's a bad thing—just a weird thing.
Welcome to Elk Falls, Kansas, a wonderful little "living ghost town" that will tell you they're not dead yet.
See this little house looking structure? Well think again, because it's an outhouse. Just let that sink in for a minute.
This sign is a great example of their style of humor. But, is it just any sign?
Elk Falls is a wonderful community that's not very populated, but the characters here have big personalities to fill the gaps.
No, it's an outhouse too. Of course it is! Though the whole town isn't outhouse themed, there sure are a lot of them around their Outhouse Tour (and design competition.)
There's all sorts of abandoned and crumbling buildings, a cemetery, and small local businesses you can tour and support. Many of the locals will be plenty friendly, as long as you're friendly back. They're a true testament to Kansas and just how nice we are. That, and how weird we can get.
For a totally non-outhouse related landmark, there's the iron bridge that spans Elk River.
It used to hold vehicles, but today you'll only find feet and bicycle wheels along this iron bridge. It's definitely a worthwhile stop, if you want to see the falls after which the town was named.
