We know it's a little odd that the state with the Air Capital of the World also has the Barbed Wire Capital of the World, but they're just as important, we think. Barbed wire is an integral part of Kansas' history, not to mention our pastures and farmland. Come check out La Crosse, and the Barbed Wire Capital of the World.
Welcome to La Crosse, the Barbed Wire Capital of the World. What does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that they hold the history of this valuable material and its changes over the years.
Barbed wire is essential to the Post Rock area of Kansas, whether it is new or old. This part of American history is documented in La Crosse, now the home of barbed wire history.
Most of the local barbed wire notoriety can be seen at the Kansas Barbed Wire Museum, where every type you can think of is displayed here with labels and information. Over 2000 varieties of wire plus antique fencing tools make this museum a great day trip location.
Barbed wire with all sorts of barb shapes, wire shapes, and uses line the walls in easy to read sections. It's almost too many bits of barbed wire!
If you're not too bored about the history of barbed wire, this is a fun afternoon just waiting to happen.
Trust me, after leaving this museum, you'll have plenty of knowledge about barbed wire and its uses and successes.
The museum is open during their May to August season from Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
