Traveling is something we love to do, but it gets bittersweet sometimes. You'll be away on vacation or traveling outside of the state, and a familiar sight or sound always makes you think of home. These things are sure to elicit a fond memory of the city we love. Have you ever experienced these and felt homesick?
1. Horses in fountains.
Everyone seems to have a favorite fountain, but the most famous fountains sometimes give us the strongest feelings of homesickness.
2. Friendly people, no matter how big the city.
Of course, not everyone here is friendly, but when someone starts a conversation with you in a grocery store line, you can't help but remember to kindness of Kansas Citians.
3. Ongoing construction that blocks traffic.
We have a lot of construction that seems to be endlessly going on, but it always feels like home when you're dodging through the orange cones or stuck waiting for the work trucks to roll through.
4. The sound (and smell) of autumn.
Those crisp leaves falling to the ground and the lightly wet smell is the perfect addition to the feelings of home.
5. Seeing these colors together.
This also applies to hearing the national anthem and wanting to finish it with "...and the home of the CHIEFS!"
6. Or these.
Don't forget our Royals or Sporting KC!
7. A shopping area covered in lights.
One of our most classic sights, it's no wonder we'll find similar places wherever we go.
8. A Hallmark store.
Hallmark started here in Kansas City, so we love our greeting cards and always spot them when we shop near one of their outlets.
9. Live jazz music.
Live music in restaurants or around popular areas is just a common sight in Kansas City. There are so many local groups that you get used to hearing beautiful music wherever you may be. Jazz just happens to be one of the genres that helped make KC so great!
10. A huge city park.
Swope is twice the size of Central Park, so when we're surrounded by nature as far as we can see, we think of our favorite place to be. Double points if you're playing golf!
11. The smell of sweet barbecue.
That KC barbecue smell that we're so used to? You definitely notice it when it's not around as often and when it makes your mouth water, you'll want a plate for sure.
If you've been thinking of moving to Kansas City or know someone who is, you'll want to check out some of these things you might not expect when you get here.
