The heart and soul of Iowa are the small towns scattered throughout the state. Each of these communities has its own unique points of interest, its own unique history, its own unique style. Many of them have fun, quaint downtown areas filled with impressive old buildings and charming small businesses. Out of all these places, it's impossible to list all of the best, but here are seven of our favorites.
1. Clarinda
With a plethora of historic buildings, an active community calendar, and a downtown revitalization project completed in 2019, Clarinda is an excellent choice for a visit. Stroll the historic downtown area, shop the cute, unique, colorful boutiques that line Main Street, or tour one of the local museums (the Glen Miller Birthplace, the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum, and the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum are all located here). 2. Orange City
There's a strong Dutch flavor to the small town of Orange City, including the downtown area. Think quaint gables, colorful murals, a coat of arms, decorative shutters, and more! Find out more here.
3. Eldora
The town of Eldora, Iowa is filled with historic buildings and gorgeous scenery. Located in Hardin County near Pine Lake State Park, it's an enchanting, magical place. Learn more here.
4. McGregor
McGregor, Iowa is tucked in between the Mississippi River and the Northeast Iowa Bluffs. It's a scenic region with lots to do and a beautiful, historic downtown to match! Learn more here.

Anita, Iowa is home to Lake Anita State Park. It's a cute little town with many family-friendly attractions: a library, a farmers market, and more. Learn more here.
6. Oskaloosa
Downtown Oskaloosa features fun shops and boutiques, a historic bandstand, and more! Don't miss the city band concerts in the summer or the Christmas light covered storefronts during the holiday season. Learn more here.

Le Claire, a suburb of the Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, is one of the fastest-growing communities in Iowa - meaning it won't be considered a small town for much longer! Still, it has a delightful downtown area. Plus it's a great place for eagle watching! Find out more here.
